Is respect a right?

My opinion is that respect is not a right. I do not believe that one person has the right to another person's thoughts and feelings. What are your thoughts?

I don't believe in rights. I believe we have privileges that can be taken away without a fuss, and privileges that can be taken away with a fuss.

As far as respect being a privileged that can be taken away without a fuss, I'd say no. Not by me anyway. I don't have to respect anything just as no one has to respect me. I should if I want to be respected but it's not a requirement.

While I personally try to treat people with respect until they prove it isn't warranted, I can see why some people would say that respect has to be earned. And I don't really believe in inherent rights anyway.

Side: No.

People get respect if they deserve respect. Needless to say, when meeting a new person one already has a certain amount of respect towards said person simply out of courtesy.

I agree. I 100% agree. .

Respect should initially be given to everyone you meet to start with but the respect can be lost due to that person's actions. Nobody has a right to respect when they are disrespectful themselves.

It's not a right if you want me to treat you with respect treat me with respect or do something to earn it, too many people expect to just get treated wit respect even though they do nothing to earn it and act like pricks

No one has the right to demand that you change your thoughts. Obviously. However people do have the right to say that others should act respectfully towards them.

Respect is earned, not freely given. .

I believe there is a basis of respect everyone has for someone, however respect can be gained or lost. So you should start out with some respect when you meet someone you don't know, but after that more can be added or some can be taken away.

Side: Yes.

Fair enough. I can agree to that. .
