Is the American or British education system better?
Although I am British and probably prefer the British education system, I can see the sense in the American way of doing things.
I like the way the British keep us all together so you know when you're changing schools and you all go through it together and you're never the odd one out and you stay with your friends - but I can also see the sense of the American way where you're grouped in your abilities, not your age...hmmm...
What about you?

Your schools, at least some, teach 8-12 grade subjects in universities... 'nuff said. Compared to my country. Some more, this is not a debate about the past, it is about what is right now and right now your educational system sucks so fucking bad. Not to mention the idiotic religion many of you guys like shoving into every wrong place. Side: British

well...i dont know much really about american school stystems, (except from what i see on american) and that is mainly because im britsh but, The American education system is unlike that in many other countries. Education is primarily the responsibility of state and local government, and so there is little standardization in the curriculum, for example. The individual states have great control over what is taught in their schools and over the requirements that a student must meet, and they are also responsible for the funding of schooling. Therefore, there is huge variation regarding courses, subjects, and other activities, but if im wrong then let me KNOW!!! (madhatty25) :p Side: British

I chose American because I don't know much about the British education system, but can you explain in a little more detail how the American system is grouped by abilities rather than age? I've always known there to be different grade levels based on age in American school systems. Side: American

Personally, I don't know a massive amount about the American scool system because I am British but I think (correct me if I'm wrong) that Americans get a test at the end of each year to determin whether they'll move up a 'grade' or have to do the whole 'grade' all over again. In Britain, your grouped by age. Each child goes into a year group and stays in that year group until they've stayed in it a full year. Then the move up a year regardless of how well they did. However, we get put in different 'sets' (classes) depending on how good we are at that subject. For example, I'm in set 1 for everything apart from PE. There are some subjects where this 'set' thing doesn't apply, like RE, Drama and Art, but it applies for most things. Whoa, that was a lot! Side: British
American students do get a test at the end of each year, but that usually isn't what determines wheter or not they move on to the next grade level. It is their accumalative average or GPA (Grade Point Average) that determines whether or not they move on to the next grade level. Each grade level is based on age, but occasionally students do fail and get held back a year (or grade level). Side: British
