Is the Jeremy Kyle Show (Jerry Springer if you're American) Ethical?

Families being torn apart in front of an audience and several other phenomenon being broadcast live on stage. Is this morally acceptable?

Yes

No

Morals are stupid anyway; everyone's are different, and everyone thinks theirs are right.

Those people phone in to say that they wish to go onto the show. They are the ones who are therefore making the questionable decision but I think as long as it is okay by them, there is no problem.

Most of it is scripted or overdone, but even if not, it's the choice of these people to go on stage and bring their problems to a live studio audience.

Nothing that I can find unethical about that.

It is entertainment. Stupid and foul, but still entertainment. I think that Americans are grossly over-entertained. I also think that entertainment is making us dumber and dumber. But its not going way anytime soon. I don't watch TV, but I watched a Jerry Springer show once and it was disgraceful. But its legal and stupid people like it.

Side: Yes

Because there is a section of the public who engage in schadenfreude who love to watch the misfortune of others.

I think the concept of the show itself isn't unethical, but the way that hosts like Jeremy Kyle conduct themselves is akin to bear baiting. Yes, I like watching chavs get all lairy, but no, I don't think its OK to do the emotional equivalent of jabbing them with sticks until they do so.

All these people, however distressed, sit there, whilst a total stranger addresses them in the rudest manor while live broadcasting their family disputes. Is this what entertainment has come to. People find humor or amusement in watching other families swearing at each other and their children on television. It's amazing how they take advice from this guy. This guy, who, is only trying to get more ratings. He doesn't care about them. Jeremy Kyle insults, bombards and humiliates these people every time. People cry, people storm off. If he is supposed to make things better, Two words. Epic Fail.

Jeremy Kyle is hilarious. If those people on the shows were do depressed that they were going to appear on television in front of maybe a few million people then how can we take them seriously? It is their fault if they do not want to be seen on television looking bad when usually that is mostly what is in their life.

There are hundreds, maybe thousands of counsellors in England, if they wanted to sort out their problems then they can do it there. It is their choice to go on the show and they have no right to complain about it.

Side: Yes

All these shows do is brings 2 people who hate each other in the same room and remind them of why they hate each other, let them fight, have security pull them off without any penalization/lawsuit, then have them leave without even solving their problem.

I know! It's just great, isn't it. If it wasn't like that, then it just wouldn't be the same.
