I guess the question would be to WHOM is it offensive. Certainly there are people who find it offensive or even traitorous. I personally don't find it offensive, and the people who do fly the confederate flag I think are doing so because they want to say "Southern Pride", even though the flag itself entails a lot more than just southern pride. I suppose it would be like if the American Colonies had lost the American revolution but still insisted on flying the American Flag, so in that sense it is a little treasonous to fly the Confederate flag. Side: Yes!
Well offensive as in, I'm "offended" that so many Americans have absolutely no idea what civil war was about or have fallen for the bs line "it's not slavery it's southern pride" or whatever. It was a group of states that committed treason because they wanted to continue using other human beings as property. So whatever, it's dumb. The funny thing is the same ones (for the most part, probably like 9/10) who love showing off a flag from a traitorous bunch of slave drivers will whine and moan at the first site of, say a Mexican flag at a parade "hey, dat ain't 'merican (spits tobacco)" Yeah dude, the rebel flag isn't american either... thus the name. Side: Yes!
You mean this link? They didn't revolt for the popular southern line of State rights or whatever, I mean they called it that because it was convenient just like Republicans today use that line for any number of things. But it's only "states rights" when it's convenient. Like, today they don't want "states rights" when it comes to abortion, they just want it illegal. Back then they saw their way of life disappearing. Their way of life being a few rich white men with all of the power and slaves while everyone else was kept dumb and paranoid enough to allow them to keep all the power and their slaves. No amount of rewriting history is going to change the real reasons the south committed treason. Keep on lowering the education standards down there though and I'm sure in a couple generations no one in the south will be able to read about what actually happened. Side: Yes!

Agreed. And let's be honest here. People who fly the rebel flag on their cars or their houses or whatever are not just showing pride for their Southern roots. It's become much more; a symbol of racism and hatred, one that I can only imagine is offensive to those whose ancestors were enslaved, beaten and killed. I know for a fact that most Northerners are offended by it; we fought a war against slavery, won that war, and people who fly the rebel flag are saying "Ha, we STILL don't give a shit about your freedoms for everyone." The rebel flag indicates a person who can't accept the way things are and has to return to his hateful ways. Side: Yes!

There are many people who find this flag offensive and many who look like Red Neck idiots for proudly displaying it! There are minorities in this country who had relatives who not too long ago saw that symbol everytime they were beaten, chased, oppressed etc. it has a history and that history is NOT a good one. It is a representation of hatred and ignorance and to have pride in it shows the admireres ignorance and stupidity. There are many around the World who still display the Nazi flag and claim it is not a symbol of discrimination, attrocities or hatred but a "Symbol of White Pride" Sound familiar? Side: Yes!
you yourself are being prejudice by calling red necks idiots i assure you that the food at you supermarket most likely came from a farm wher more than likely they talk with a southern drawl and don't care for city behavior I used to live on a farm and i will assure you that red necks are not idiots we are usually farther ahead in our schooling then others in our vast country Side: No way!

I have done farming for about 20 years now. If you read the cargument I made I said those who fly the Rebel Flag are red neck idiots not everyone who talks with a southern drawl. If something does not necessarily apply to you then do not take it offensively but if you do fly your rebel flag with pride then please take it the way I meant it! Side: No way!

The entire point of the Civil War was to keep the 'institution of slavery which has been threatened alive and well.' There was NO other point to the Civil War. Maybe it was because of liberty... liberty to enslave another race of human beings. I don't care if you're proud of how your people fought many years ago! Germany does not celebrate the Nazi flag because they aren't goddamn idiots who don't realize that the Nazi party murdered millions of people! Side: Yes!

Except the Chinese are still suffering brainwashing and oppression under totalitarianism. Asking them to not adore Chairman Mao is like asking a modern day Nazi to not adore Adolf Hitler. The difference is that Germany is free now. Now that they're free, they aren't being fucking idiots and not recognizing the horrors of Hitler and the Nazi Party. I'm sure the Chinese will do the same someday once they aren't being oppressed, but right now, they are a very bad example for your argument. Side: Yes!

There is much to admire about both black and white cultures of the American South including the deep Christianity that has been created throughout the region. The accent, music, food, dance, and other cultural achievements of the South have much to be admired, but the Rebel flag represents slavery in too many minds, especially those of black people, who are our Christian brothers and sisters, fellow children of God. not only is it the BATTLE flag of traitors, but it has since come to SYMBOLIZE white supremacy and racial hatred. it has no place on display in any public place where government dollars are at work. you want to put it up over your fireplace to show ppl when they come to dinner, fine.... that way they can know where you are coming from and walk out, if they have any sense. So it's not offensive at all for someone to celebrate a flag which was only created for the purpose of perpetuating race-based slavery? Seems to me like honoring such a thing makes you a fool for not realizing it's folly or a racist for actually realizing it's folly. I'm sorry to say, but it's equivalent to flying the Nazi flag because your ancestors were German immigrants. You have to question the person who's flying the flag... because honoring such a terrible symbol REALLY questions how they feel about certain... subjects. Side: Yes!
Only created for the purpose of prepetuating race-based slavery? No... that wasn't its purpose. The purpose was to show a secession and separation from the "tyrannical" North. That's like saying that the American Flag was created just to support the murder of indians and perpetuation of race-based slavery. The Nazi Flag is a support for the Basic ideals of the Nazi Party, which included an established Superior Race (the Aryan Race). The beliefs of those in the Confederacy did not HAVE to be "blacks are slaves, whites are owners". In fact, Robert E. Lee freed his slaves. He became General because he supported the idea of a Confederacy... he didn't care much for human rights violations. So really... you're just not good at History... Side: No way!

why would it be offensive to have a rebel flag?????? do you find the maori flag offensive??? do you find the American flag offensive????? do you find the chinese flag offensive???? wtf whoever is for this debate needs to sort there shit out. every country, society, REBEL or WHOEVER deserves the right to a flag or ANYTHING to mark their own individuality and anyone who finds any flag offensive is screwed in the completely backward direction! Side: No way!
It is not the flag of rebellion, but of freedom. An attempt at freedom from a domineering and despotic government not unlike the government from whom the "revolutionaries" were rebelling nearly a century prior. It is not the flag of slavery, as many would have you believe, but of freedom from tyranny. Side: No way!
It all has to do with pride for where they come from. The war wasnt based on slavery but the right to secede. So how can it be offensive. Most believe it is only because they think it was based on slavery but when u,you look into it the war only started when they where told they couldn't secede Side: No way!
