Is the United Nations good or bad?

Good

Good IMO, we need global law, if not whats to stop another Hitler or an illegal war from a Country to another Country for no good reason like calming they have weapons of mass destruction, (Oh Wait, Never mind that last example) lol

But Yeah if done right a UN is much needed to help keep tyrannical governments at bay, like the USA, yeah I said it and I'm an American.

Side: Good

the problem is there is then nothing to keep the UN in check for things like what they did when Congo first got it's independence. Besides, the UN criticizes Canada for human rights violations more then North Korea.

I agree, like who's going to keep the UN in check ect. but that's the risk we have to take to keep rogue governments from going all WW2 on us again, we just have to hope that the combined governments in the UN have humanity in mind, after all if there is one thing we all want no matter where we are from, what religion you're are part of, how much money and power we need, that is "LIFE" above all else.

The UN is there to stop another Hitler with 21 century weapons on a warpath that might kill us all.

Just replace Canada with Israel and you're right Canada is commenmed more but Israel's hated most!!!!!!!!!!¡¡¡¡¡!!!!!¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

Wrong. Globalism will lead to a totalitarian dictatorship. .

As much as it pains me, I have to agree. I must be getting soft.

Just to let you know how soft I'm getting, I gave you an up-vote.

Also without the UN nothing will stop America from taking over the World, Yes America alone can wipe out any other Country, America spends 50%+ of our budge on military advancement , America spends more on military then the next ten governments combined, the UN is to keep America in Check, if not our greed and power hungry ways will tempt us in global domination, as you can see already.

There are rumors that the American military technology is something like 50+ ahead of the rest of the world, America had the Internet in the 1960's, it wasn't until the 1990's when the world got to see any of it, America got weapons that will make the A-bomb look like a fire cracker, "like Anti-matter bombs to the warping space and time".

NASA came out a few years ago talking about they are working on a prototype to Miguel Alcubierre Warp drive.

If you think America isn't in some way working on a weapon based on this theory then you are delusional lol, ever see "Star Treks Red Matter Weapon", that's a weapon that rips a whole thought the very fabric of space and time, (in portable black hole in a nut shell)

Even with all of this technology, the US wouldn't be able to take over the world. They could wipe out everything, but take it over? All the other countries would be able to beat the US back and rip them a new one. Population advantage, superior firepower (even though it is less advanced), and more resources would let them win. Plus, there is really nothing to take over in space. It's space. No one is out there except us and maybe the Russians and Chinese.

Thats the point the UN is to prevent one government from doing just that, 1v1 the US will dominate any other Country hands down, but not when there are 50 other countries to get in there way.

Side: Good

I wouldn't believe half of that, what I do believe is that China could blow up little America any day of the week. America is not so high and mighty and I wouldn't be surprised if her says are seriously numbered.

You refer to a Star Trek episode? Don't you think something is wrong with your logic?

Participation in the UN is voluntary. Well. Kind of like when the Italian mob tells you it's voluntary, but if a heavy hitter like the USA decided to bow out and tell the UN to sit and spin, they couldn't really do much about it besides grumble at us bloody Americans.

Right. Anyways. If technology weren't advancing at a fairly surprising rate these days and information warfare becoming increasingly more important and easy, I'd say the UN isn't exactly a good thing, but honestly, there needs to be a platform where nations can get together and talk shit out as well as help each other out and decide what's best for everyone. It's not a perfect system, but I think it does more good than harm. And if it does more good, than bad, then it's not bad.

If tech continues to go the way it is, globalization is inevitable. Although it'd be p.cool if we got moon and mars colonies going, too. Pretty soon, we'll have space-nazis.

In my opinion United Nation is good, because we need some kind of organization which can solve some international problems, or just influence change opinion in some agressive coutnries. We need internationl laws and the organization which will control all action which hapend in our days. Moreover, it can solve problems and try to do the best in all humans sphere. As well as, United nation has their own representations in each country which is include in UN and it can keep track of world's life and keep the peaceю

It has solved very few problems, and the only problem the UN is trying to solve now is the "problem" of Israel existing! Other nations may of been condemned but Israel has been condemned more times then any other country! They seem to enjoy bullying Israel! They're not defenseless but It's unfair none the less! The ICC is a kangaroo court, The UN "human rights council" is a battle field! It's like an abusive home or school for just one kid! That one kid aka Israel Can't win! Everything they do to the bullies is wrong, they're existence is wrong to the teacher and her classmates or the parent and her siblings!

Sure it has its problems. Problems like the fact that developing countries are narrowly represented, but these problems are nothing compared things like Israel, USA, Canada and other insignificant states who are continuously disrupting a Middle Eastern nuclear weapons free zone. I mean seriously, in 2012 basically the entire world (176 states) voted for Israel to join the NPT, but USA with five other states (not suprisingly Israel itself) managed to veto such a decision. (Y) Great job.

I think it's good. Without the UN many more lives would be lost; like the many dead in Syria. While the UN has it's failures, it has many more success. So I believe the UN is good.

The United Nations truely is a good thing. It may not be perfect but its the best we got. For example during the Cold war it Helped save the world from a Nuclear world War III multiple times. These were durng the Cuban Missile crisses and U-2, the Yom Kippur war in 1973, and again in the 1980's. then their are the instinces of Genocide and "ethnic Cleansing", like in Rawanda. Now there were many mistakes, but the UN operation saved over 200,000 people and alowed for the country to Stabilize after. In places like Seirra Leone the conflict has stoped and re building has started. In the DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo) the UN has done some realy good things in protecting civilians and facilitating the distribution of things like Medicine, clean water, Food, things like blankets and shelter. In Bosnia, for the first time in history, no one died of hunger or the elements. The organizations withen the United Nations such as the WHO, WFO, UNDP, UNHABITAT, FAO, IACS, UNICEF, UNHCR, and others also do realy great things. The WHO facilitated the eradiction of Small pox, WFO has prevented millions from dieing of hunger. UNHABITAT is icreasing the standard of living throughout the world. The UNDP has taken on the MDG's wich decrease hunger and oppression, AIDs/HIV. It also lessens the Impact of Disaster while Increasing education, healthcare, Democratic Government, and equality for women and the oppressed.

Side: Good

It is O.K. but the United Nations needs to do more to sanction those countries that are abusing human rights.

Side: Good

It's a try to create a one-world government. They dictate laws that usurp other countries' laws, including the United State's and they stick their heads where they are not wanted. They don't realize that the UN exists because the US lets it exists. If the US pulled their support, the UN would have no credibility, reduced military presence, and lower financial income. Personally, I think it needs its powers reduced. There is no one to monitor it, which is scary.

United nations are acting like a global governance. I find it unacceptable for the U.N to now be the world government. I say this because, we are all sovereign nations. Canada and the united states for example have democracy and that is where the government is for the people by the people. There are no elections in the U.N, just votes and it was created by governments for governments.

It's a tricky and controversial subject, but without the UN nothing will stop power hungry governments from doing what Hitler did, it's in a sense "governments by the governments for the governments", so democracy on a lager scale, if you know what I mean.

I still think that it's bad that they are creating legislation that is going to directly effect the people and not the governments.

There are genocides with the UN around, you just never hear about it because the world and the UN is WAY more focused on the "crime" of Building settlements and defending yourself then on actual genocides of the other countries you know the one that are NOT Israel! Note this is only a crime if you're a small nation called Israel!

Lets look at this way Dana, you effect your family, your family effects the town, your town effects your district, your district effects your state, your state effects your country, your country effects your UN, your UN effects your World.

See were I'm coming from, so in order to not have totalitarian dictatorship, we the people need to make dam sure that don't happen, by force if necessary if votes fail.

They blame Israel for Everything, not everything GOOD of course just everything bad! There have been 3 durban confrences in honor of bashing Israel, there have been special sessions again just for bashing Israel, If Israel's in the ICC, congratuations they're already guilty by DEFAULT! Israel is guilty AGAIN in the kangaroo court that is the United Nations! I even compare to an unfair school! I even made a character up because Israel only has one friend and that's Canada, and if Canada betrays her too then she'll have no friends! The character that I made up will NEVER betray Israel EVER!
