Is the United States the greatest nation on earth?

Many Americans believe that the U.S. is the greatest nation the world has seen.
Is this true or false?

For over 100 years the United States has been the vanguard in the fight against oppression and megalomanic warlords such as Hitler and Stalin. Most of Europe would be under the 'JackBoot' of Germany or of Stalin's murderous U.S.S.R., had it not been for ''THE GREATEST NATION ON EARTH', the United States of America. When natural disasters occur in the world American humanitarian aid is usually the first to arrive in the stricken areas and the generosity of their foreign aid programme is second to none. Present day aggressors are kept in check simply as a consequence of the presence of the U.S., whom they know would not stand idly by and permit the bullying of small nations by more powerful aggressors. For instance, if the U.S, weren't around China would have long since ''appropriated'' most of the mineral rich South China Sea. The world would be a significantly more dangerous and poorer place without the GREAT UNITED STATES. God Bless America.

I have more respect for George Washington than for an arsonist who thinks he is God's chosen instrument of fighting evil

This coming from a hypocrite who supports KILLING viable unborn late term babies when you vote for Democrats.

Christians were the main group of people fighting to end slavery in this nation. Democrats supported slavery just a few hundred years ago.

You support aborting viable babies up to birth with your vote while decrying what you call slavery thousands of years ago durng a time when people would have probably died were it not for someone taking them as a servant. I bet some people were begging to be so called slaves during that time.

TOTAL HYPOCRITE.

The U.S is founded on the greatest political principles on Earth. That's what our greatness is composed of and where it springs from. The extent to which other countries around the world have adopted these political principles, is the extent to which they have risen in greatness in their own right. The values of America are not unique to the United States. What is unique is how far we went in adopting he principles of the enlightenment. The fact that we were basically the first to do it is kind of a petty bragging right, though it is true.

I wish more countries thought that they were the greatest nation. A sense of national pride can do a lot to lift up a people. So long as they have a keen sense of justice, national pride is mostly beneficial. The world would be a better place if more people had as much pride in their nation as Americans tend to have in ours.

You bet it is ! But those that believe it isn't should get the HELL OUT ! Go find yourself a good MUSLIM country to move to and take your LGBT with you and see how well that works out for you !

I'm proud to be a US citizen and I believe our nation has overall been a great both domestically and internationally. But "greatest"? Let's test that.

In North America it's not a bad argument that Canada is just as great if not better. Heck, when Americans are unpopular abroad they often like to lie and say they're Canadian. That tells you something.

In Europe there are literally dozens of countries richer in history, culture, and modernity. And it's lessons from those countries which combined to build our own Constitution. We can't take sole credit for that.

In Asia, China is the giant of history and remains the giant today. Odds are 500 years after the USA implodes and eats itself that China will still be going strong.

Anyway, we're pretty great. We're also full of ourselves. There's a lot of other greats out there, too.

I agree we are a great country. We have had some problems in the past but this in normal and even unavoidable. All part of a cycle, as all great nations go into. We will soon be back on top.

I have a question to you: you claim that we are not treated well abroad. so I ask you if you yourself has ever traveled? I have, quite a bit. and I have seen that Americans are treated no worse than other tourists so long as they show respect to their hosts. France is a prime example, a country I've heard many Americans say is rude to us. most who say this have never been. I have been twice, each time for about two weeks, and been in about six different towns and cities. I never had any problem with the French and even found them more friendly than some I could name.

God Bless.

You're right, I was repeating hearsay. I've been to Canada but not abroad. It's probably true that the majority of Americans are treated the same as the rest of the world, with the exception of those areas actively at war.

Obviously it would depend on what a persons standard for greatness is. What I like about you Canadian comment is that Canadians will often say they are Americans unless they think it would be unpopular, then they are Canadian. That tells you something different.

The US has the highest GDP. Seems like the best measure.

We also have to most political freedoms.

China's stock market collapsed and it isn't free at all.

Arguably, yes .... arguably, no. We TRY to be, and we should be proud of that, however, arrogance is NEVER great, (look at The Donald....), and WE have done some terrible things, things that can only be done by a powerful, arrogant country!

Are we ONE of the greatest ....undoubtedly, yes. To BE the greatest we would have to be judged that by the rest of the world. We have a ways to go .... we HAD it .... lost it ....have to get it back. We are NOT going to get it back with "walls" and arrogance, name calling, belittling, forcing OUR beliefs down the throats of others.

What makes a nation "great" in your view?

The rest of the world has to judge us?

Any nation can consider themselves "great". Nazi Germany considered themselves great, even "supermen". The rest of the world didn't think so! I worked for a large German company for the last 18 years of working career, they STILL think they are greater than anyone else. Yes, it's up to the rest of the world, WE can't be great "in our own minds", it has to be in the minds of the world!

its a great nation but not the greatest, Britain was the greatest but not anymore, for me I would lean more towards Australia being the greatest nation on earth and that hurts as a proud Englishman.

It's a pompous statement, vague and means nothing. What is great depends on who you are asking. Maybe what we should ask is what we can do to do better.
