Is the confederate flag racist?

In a history display it would not be. Potentially as part of art it would not be. But displayed as part of an active government entity, or even at a private residence but visible to all passerbys, then yes it would be. It is analogous to the Nazi swastika. It will always be intrinsically linked to a bloody war over Black slavery. And the proponents who claim it merely symbolizes rebellion or pride in the South overlook the fact historians say it was not even actually the real Confederate flag but instead just one specific army of the rebellion, and indeed that army was fighting to keep Black's enslaved. It is an unacceptable leap to claim this particular flag somehow represents all of the South. And you can't even say it represents rebellion when the whole mission of the Confederate armies was to continue to keep Blacks enslaved. Protecting your status quo is not rebellion.

It can be construed as being racist by some. And it is by myself as well. This is indeed a natural and a correct assumption. Since the states that it originally represented were indeed in favor of enslaving black Americans. So much so that they committed treasonous insurrection against the United States government when they became afraid that this practice was going to be outlawed.

Sure, some rednecks say the flag is only a state flag, or that it represents history. Bullshit. Using those criteria, we could say the Nazi flag is not racist, and it is only a symbol from history.

Here is more proof that the Confederate flag is racist: ask anybody, even somebody who is flying the flag, or who had a decal of it on the back window of their redneck pickup truck, what it is. What it means? Where did it come from? What is it's history and origin? Like you were playing dumb and really did not know.

So..I can promise you that in their attempt explain the flag, they would HAVE to mention the Confederacy and what it stood for.

Ergo; Racism.

Case closed.

Whenever I consider American history, I am shocked beyond description by the very existence of the American civil war. In this conflict, hundreds of thousands of people gave up their lives in order to protect their way of life which rested on the institution of American slavery. It is unfathomable to me that anyone could make the ultimate sacrifice in order to keep someone else in bondage, let alone hundreds of thousands of people. For Christ's sake, people in the South sent their own KIDS to die to protect slavery! The confederate flag is unequivocally the symbol of this movement, and therefore, should be reviled by any thinking and feeling human being. Any person who tells you that the confederate flag is part of their heritage and deserves to be respected should be tied to a chair and beaten with sticks.

Yes it is. But the confederate flag that we know today is one of many other designs and styles of the flag. The second Confederate flag issued in 1863 featured the Con. Flag we know today in the upper left corner and everything else being white to symbolize White Supremacy. This was easily mistaken for a white flag (Which means surrender) so about to years later they replaced it with the 3rd flag called "The Blood-Stained Banner" The only difference from the prior flag was that it was shorter in width and featured a vertical red rectangle on the far right. But despite what the flag's design are intended to represent, It has been associated with Slavery, Segregation, and White Supremacy.

Why should a flag be seen as racist ? If the Confederate Flag is seen as racist does the Progressive Left view the ISIS Flag as racist ?

Do you know what the white on the Confederate Flag was meant to represent, according to the very man who designed it?

"As a people we are fighting to maintain the Heaven-ordained supremacy of the white man over the inferior or colored race; A white flag would thus be emlemetical of our cause. Upon a red field would stand fourth our southern cross, Gemmed, preserving in beautiful contrast the red white and blue."

-William T. Thompson

So yes, it's "original origins" are racist.

Its original design was to similar to the union flag at the first battle of the civil war so it was changed to the design we know today, so its origins were changed to suit the current climate.

Side: Yes

I always viewed it as a symbol of rebellion; a revolt against government intrusion, a stand for states rights. I don't support the institution of slavery, but growing up that's what it was portrayed as. Just saying.
