Albert Einstein's theory of General Relativity suggests that the universe [as we know it] had a beginning but the universe [as we know it] wasn't eternal. There, I fixed it. The universe as we know it consists of three dimensions of space, one dimension of time, some snazzy physical constants, and a bunch of stuff we don't understand yet. We have yet to have an answer, or any demonstrated scientific theory, as to what happened "before" the Big Bang, or if temporal terminology doesn't apply, what "caused" the Big Bang. Side: Infinite.
We can't really know what happened before the universe was into existence. The only explanation I can think of is what caused the universe to exist is God creating it. You see the universe cannot come into existence out of nothing. For instance, if I wanted to bake a cake I would have to make it myself. If I just sit around and wait for who knows how long the cake will not be baked. So I believe that the universe requires a Creator to make the universe and without it we simply along with the universe would cease to exist. Side: Finite.
