Is there any objective purpose to life? Or do we give it purpose?
Hello, Starchild here.
Recently, I had the chance to talk to an Atheist and he asked a rather interesting question. "Is there an objective purpose to your life or do you make up your own?". I didn't know how to answer at first, so I am bringing the question here. Is there any objective purpose to life? Or do we give it purpose?
Do you believe that the more a species evolves the more it can deviate from it's primitive insticts and begin to give it's own life the purpose it wants?
Do you ever listen to these religious people defend religion and actually think about how religious people acted in the past? The guy talks about atheism leading to the brutal spreading of genes, but religion had always been the governing factor in the past.
You don't see the degree of depravity that grows as in this clip?
So your comparing a swing in society from loving your neighbor,
looking out for others, and honor with a handshake, and standing
for what is right, and giving into the communities, and in protecting strong families where mom and dad stay together, and shame for not honoring your commitments to the atheist example that is engrossed in his own genes and lusts, and he has no need for emotions. And other than law and fear of prison everthing else is acceptable.
I don't see a growth in depravity since I pay attention to facts and not emotions. We are more educated now and there is less crime. The world is a better place than it had ever been.
When you live in darkness there is no boundaries or contrast.
Darkness is one with darkness and light is one with light.
The boundary is between light and darkness.
If you love darkness you are one with it, we wouldn't then expect you to see any contrast since there is no light in you.
Sad, not sure of your fate. With God all things are possible. But if your foolish heart is darkened, and you don't love light then nothing will disturb the beasts that bound you in the darkness.
Since we are rational beings, we can choose to not procreate. We are no longer bound by evolutionary pressure.
The claim that "the purpose of life is to live" is circular. By adding any purpose other than "to live" would resolve the circular nature of the argument.
Spreading genes is not the same as continuing life. Most (All) human children cannot survive without adult care. A human family unit propagates human life. Random fucking does nothing other than raise abortion and single-mother rates.
1. That was trying to guess at where you might go next.
2. If you're going to try and defend someone else's point, then you have to actually understand it first. His point was never about "random" fucking. He gave the fucking a goal, which is specifically "spread genes".
3. He didn't specify fucking as the method to spread genes. There are other ways to spread them as well.
1. Fucking does spread your genes, but it may not lead to procreation. The objective purpose of sex is pleasure, especially if it does not lead to procreation.
2. I know what he meant by "spread genes". The literal interpretation of "spread genes" is fucking, not procreation.
I think a personal purpose can also be an objective one.
I doubt there is a universal objective purpose beyond that of procreation. Even that is not universal since certain disorders prevent the possibility of procreation.
Our purpose in life is to do what our Creator has told us to do. That is to preach the good news of Jesus Christ to everyone. To make disciples, and to live a life that is pleasing to Him.
Perhaps an If By whiskey argument. If by purpose you mean, contributing to the community , then yes. Discover your gift. Give it away. IMO, if you have to ask, then no.
If all you care about is your life which is probably the most rational view, then the question can be reduced down to "what created my life?". Since perception is subjective, I do not think that there is an absolute perspective regarding life, so there is no reason to limit the objective purpose to one rationale.
The bottom line is that we each fulfil the destiny we create for ourselves and overcome life's obstacles as we travel along our journey through life and the best we can hope for is that it is enjoyable and rewarding
I'd argue that the term "Self Purpose" is a bit redundant. After all, try to think of a purpose that hasn't been realized through a subjective mind. It's impossible.
Purpose, like all other things that are a part of the human experience, seems to be contingent upon the perception of individual persons, which makes our understanding of it inherently subjective.
Does this mean that we should assume that there isn't an objective purpose to life? Not at all, there just isn't a solid foundation to believe in any "objective" purposes.
the idea of procreating for genes is false as a purpose, at least for humans, as many people have decided to choose not to have children. many people decide not to have sex either, identifying as asexual.
the idea that we are on a mission or serve a purpose from some deity is equally wrong, as many have chosen purposes other than that (the existence of more than one religion, atheism, swapping religions).
you could argue that there is a one true purpose and that many have simply deviated from that purpose, but the fact that even one person has deviated from it shows that it is possible to do so, and gives rise to choice.
