Is there any objective purpose to life? Or do we give it purpose?

Hello, Starchild here.

Recently, I had the chance to talk to an Atheist and he asked a rather interesting question. "Is there an objective purpose to your life or do you make up your own?". I didn't know how to answer at first, so I am bringing the question here. Is there any objective purpose to life? Or do we give it purpose?

Is there any objective purpose to life?

Yup same objective as every other animal survive and spread your genes.

Side: Objective Purpose

Do you believe that the more a species evolves the more it can deviate from it's primitive insticts and begin to give it's own life the purpose it wants?

The purpose of life is to live? That's circular, brah.

To live and to fuck. No longer circular.

If there is a creator, we have already been told our purpose.

If there is no creator, life of any sort is just one more thing to marvel at in our beautiful universe.

Either way relax and enjoy.

I think a personal purpose can also be an objective one.

I doubt there is a universal objective purpose beyond that of procreation. Even that is not universal since certain disorders prevent the possibility of procreation.

Our purpose in life is to do what our Creator has told us to do. That is to preach the good news of Jesus Christ to everyone. To make disciples, and to live a life that is pleasing to Him.

Yeah, I don't know there is something about you that reminds me of Saintnow. It methodical order is too textbook, for a 19 year old.

And ref to age related sentenced are put in, and not context. They are deliberate. I can't say for sure but the evidence suggests Saintnow.

Are you implying that I'm Saintnow? I assure you that we aren't the same person.

Perhaps an If By whiskey argument. If by purpose you mean, contributing to the community , then yes. Discover your gift. Give it away. IMO, if you have to ask, then no.

First you must ask, "what created life?" For something to have an objective purpose, means that it was created to have one.

All anylsis should stop there. Cogency.

If all you care about is your life which is probably the most rational view, then the question can be reduced down to "what created my life?". Since perception is subjective, I do not think that there is an absolute perspective regarding life, so there is no reason to limit the objective purpose to one rationale.

What suggests that , only caring about one's own life, is the most rational view?

People are born, live and die.

At the end some wonder "what was that all about"

Some have achieved their life dreams

Some are disillusioned and filled with regret

Some suffer from disease, injury etc

Some live a long healthy life

Some are happy some are not

Some are poor some are rich

Some are lucky some are not

The bottom line is that we each fulfil the destiny we create for ourselves and overcome life's obstacles as we travel along our journey through life and the best we can hope for is that it is enjoyable and rewarding

Define "life".

I'd argue that the term "Self Purpose" is a bit redundant. After all, try to think of a purpose that hasn't been realized through a subjective mind. It's impossible.

Purpose, like all other things that are a part of the human experience, seems to be contingent upon the perception of individual persons, which makes our understanding of it inherently subjective.

Does this mean that we should assume that there isn't an objective purpose to life? Not at all, there just isn't a solid foundation to believe in any "objective" purposes.

the idea of procreating for genes is false as a purpose, at least for humans, as many people have decided to choose not to have children. many people decide not to have sex either, identifying as asexual.

the idea that we are on a mission or serve a purpose from some deity is equally wrong, as many have chosen purposes other than that (the existence of more than one religion, atheism, swapping religions).

you could argue that there is a one true purpose and that many have simply deviated from that purpose, but the fact that even one person has deviated from it shows that it is possible to do so, and gives rise to choice.
