I honestly don't see a war happening anytime in the future, at least not at the caliber of the previous world wars. If anything, the closest thing to a war that anyone could reasonably predict, would likely be the members of the UN vs. the volatile Middle east, if and when the Middle East acquires nuclear weapons. ps. If there really is a World War III, then one thing that will be for sure is that World War IV shall be fought with sticks and stones. Side: NO WAY
If you think China is going to be on the same side as the US, I don't know what planet you're from. China's probably going to throw its weight in with North Korea and the other communist states. Likely there will be no main theater. About 3-4 hours worth of nuclear armageddon, and the war ends. Side: Definitely
China is an economic powerhouse, and depending on how our relationship develops with them and how far in the future this world war will be, I could see China allying with us. China has a growing middle class that has already opened up to a great extent. Additionally, depending on how the war starts. Perhaps a terrorist organization gets a hold of nuclear weapons. In that case, I could see that organization despising China for either it's "decadence", being "infidels", or denouncing their consumerism. China is actually very similar to the US. There are some possibilities that WW III might occur, but apparently our biggest threat is Russia, by the reason that that they possess various nuclear weapons and so do we. Though, to have this War would be officially a global suicide, as the major weapon to be used is of atomic and nuclear, thus destroying the planet. As for the teams, I am not quite certain. The whole world would be affected of course, deaths caused by radiation, alike to what occurred to Japan, would continue spreading into the southern hemisphere, demolishing plants and sources of food. What can lead to this situation is predictably Russia "nuking" others harshly. The whole world would be at bitter war. Side: Definitely

I think you have a misunderstanding of the apocalypse that is predicted to happen in the year 2012. Although there has been implications that have been supported by multiple ancient civilizations of an apocalypse, the actual meaning is quite contrary to popular belief. You see, apocalypse in its purist roots, actually means an unveiling of something the has been previously hidden/veiled. This then suggests that some sort of great awakening/enlightenment is coming rather than the great global catastrophe that everyone believes is inevitable. Side: No way
