Is wearing fur morally wrong?

Since no one has argued this side...

If the only reason you're wearing a fur coat is to brag that you have the dough to obtain some endangered creature's hide, then it is morally wrong.

I think if the animal is killed just for its fur and then you buy and or wear it it is morally wrong. If the animal is already dead then I don't necessarily consider it morally wrong for that individual to make use of any part of the animal but the message it sends(wearing fur is OK/cool/fashionable etc...) could be. Unless you are stuck up in the mountains or some other remote place I find it morally wrong to kill any animal for its fur.

i'm a cotton kind of person. i'd be afraid to wear a fur anything strictly because i'd feel like i'm showcasing a dead animal on my back.

Most of the fur in the West comes from China because of their cheap labor. This is why they're becoming the biggest exporter of fur globally. There are no animal welfare laws in China either.

It's morally wrong because that fur used to belong to a living being which was killed so people would buy it to look fancy. That certainly is not a good reason to kill an animal.

Fur is only worn to symbolize money and it is at the expense of animals that sometimes are not even used for their meat. I find that morally wrong.

First of all, everyone is buried in their lives, fertilizing the soil, a part of life that is NEEDED for survival. Killing an animal and using it's fur for warmth is just morally wrong. Instead of wasting it's life and showing off a dead animal, there are coats and boots and bags that have FAKE FUR and still look fashionable. So why the hell should you waste an animals life for its fur when you can save it and feel the same way wearing a fake object.

Side: yes

No. What else are you going to do with the hide of a dead animal? Throw it away? Let it rot? Use it as a doily for your lamp? Wastefulness is morally wrong, imo.

It kept the animal warm in life, let it continue to warm someone after death.

You are missing the point, many animals are killed for sole purpose of getting their fur for clothing purpose.

No, that was not the point. The question is simply "is wearing fur morally wrong?"

If the question was "is fur-farming morally wrong?" then you might be correct, but that's not what this debate was about.

Fur bearing animals are raised, like pigs and cattle, for a specific purpose.

1. They are not abused like some think; they are treated well. Abused animals would offer ragged, ugly pelts that no one would buy; to make a luxurious, beautiful coat you MUST use healthy animals.

3. The fur industry helps farmers and ranchers in a small way. Minks and foxes are fed the parts of pigs, cows, and chickens that they love and we refuse to eat (eyes, intestines, brains and the like) creating a ecologically-friendly product from...garbage! The furs themselves use even more garbage to preserve them; rotting eggs, banana peels, etc. give off certain chemicals that preserve the hide. In a strange way, the fur bisness is helping to keep garbage out of landfills.

4. Real fur, unlike fake fur and other coat options for those that live in a winter clime, is biodegradable. Pleather, synthetic cloth, and other non-animal products used to keep warm use up fossil fuels and will never break down.

4. They are NOT skinned alive, despite what PETA may say. Trying to skin an animal alive is stupid incarnate; it will thrash and bite. Killing the animal quickly and cleanly THEN skinning it is much quicker, safer, and easier. Its also cleaner and less damaging to the fur because a corpse doesn't bleed while skinning, thus the fur can be removed without it being soiled.

5. Animals are killed quickly and cleanly. This is partially to speed up the skinning process, and also an animal that dies painfully and slowly will thrash and be a danger to human workers, and the thrashing might damage the fur. Argon gas is the most used euthanization method. It is orderless, quick, as well as safe and inexpensive. Animals feel no anxiety or fear, and continue to eat from the food plate in the gas chamber until passing out.

6. Lastly, the videos of supposed 'live' skinning. I'm sure you've seen them. Well, sorry to disappoint, but they are STAGED. In this vid, the skinners were paid to skin the animals alive. These are called 'snuff' films, videos that are either staged or altered by organizations to raise money for themselves-which goes toward lining their own pockets and not toward helping animals. For instance, when the video goes to the part where the skinned, still living animal is in the bin, look closely at the other animal corpses. Unlike the first, all the others are pale and bloodless; that is because the other were skinned post-mortum. Animals don't bleed when they are skinned after death, only before. This means that of all those animals, only the one that was taped was the one that was skinned alive.

depends on your morals. if you think wearing the skin of a dead animal is wrong... i guess to you it's wrong.

me? i'm not into fur, but i don't find it wrong at all. mainly cause of what Sparsely said.

Oh, and I almost forgot: the waste from the animals is used as fertilizer, and the meat is ground up and used for pet food. So, if you eat plants and you have a pet dog or cat, you are supporting the fur trade.

Side: No

Wearing fur is not morally wrong but wearing furry animals is morally wrong and also impractical. I mean, you would have to gag them so they wouldn't make any noise and tie their little feet so they sit still and plug up their little butt hole so they don't defecate on you..... It's just not right! Better to take them out before you take them out on the town (if you know what I mean ;).

Side: No

But they could still urinate on you...

(This has to be the stupidest thing I have ever put up on this site... I am stooping to your level now Joe... =)

Side: No

I rub up..... I mean....., off..... on people.

Well, I guess you'd have to plug up that little hole as well. Which is why it just isn't right, let alone morally right.

Side: No

I see nothing wrong in wearing fur that is raised for that purpose. I know that mink is but I'm not sure if there are ohers.

Side: No

We kill them for food, why not for warmth or for fashion?????

No, anyone who says it is wrong is just bashing their ancestors. People have hunted since the near beginning of time. Wearing fur is not wrong at all. Most fur you buy in stores isn't real fur. It takes along time for people to understand that.

Side: No

No. Furs are noble, elegance. Warm, have style, are natural and durable. I myself like to wear fur and can understand people, the way to the fur seems immoral.

What other alternatives would one consider? Shaving a beaver and gluing the hair on something else resembling skin?

Wait.... smirk.... I said, "beaver".... smirk.... ;)

I'm gonna get voted down now, ain't I? Damn H.S. humor!
