Improbable? Sure. Impossible? No When I debate with theists I hold no expectation that I will convince them, I just want them to think about it. Indeed, if someone were to say that I made them question their faith, I suspect I might feel uncomfortable initially. That's a big emotional segment of their lives. I'm not used to having an effect on paradigms. But on those rare occasions when a theist actually challenges me, I like it. It causes me to think and to research. As yet, none have convinced me. But a handful have encouraged me to increase my intellectual development. That, to me, is productive, and I can only endeavor to reciprocate. Side: No

According to my experience it is possible. But no direct opponent ever admits that the arguments they're faced with are convincing. Later on though, if you are respectful enough, you can see signs that you got through. Plus there's no telling how productive the debate may be to lurkers whose opinions are still developing.
