It's Perfectly OK for a Christian to Question the Resurrection

I am a Born Again Christian who loves God, loves my Church, and loves and admires and tries with all my heart to live by the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth.

People can be followers of somebody's creed and ethos, their teachings, and call themselves followers of the this person, even disciples, without being required to believe that person is Divine or Immortal. Or much less, God.

A follower of, say, Martin Luther is a Lutheran. A follower of John Calvin subscribes to Calvinsim. A follower of the Tao believes in Taosim.

A follower of Jesus is a Christian. This is not a difficult concept.

Yet a few of our more narrow minded and zealous false prophets here tell me that I cannot refer to myself as a Christian since I question the physical, or bodiy resurrection of Jesus. And instead am inclined to believe it was a Spiritual Resurrection--an awakening, if I may--of His disciples. As to what His message was for us and what His life and ministry meant.

I of course am not alone. Many theologians (most?) agree with me. In my right to call myself a Christian. My favorite contemporary John Shelby Spong has claimed this for decades. He is the former Bishop of the Episcopalian Church.

I offer these thoughts not so much to justify my beliefs, since I am very comfortable and secure in them, but rather to welcome all who feel the same into the fold of Christianity. Don't let the zealots drive you away! Please.

A brief perusal of this great article tells more.

A source no less than Christinaity Today! agrees with me on this. And also thinks that doubt is an important part of faith.

Those of us who are secure enough are OK to admit our doubts.

Unlike some of the false zealots we have here, who think that parroting fire and brimstone verses in any way strengthens their connection to God. In a way I think, they are in denial, and actually doubt some tenets of their Faith as well. And by what the shrinks call "over-compensation" try to cover that up with pasting bible quotes. This is sad, I think. God Bless.

I see from the rantings of some that I need to explain.........

In the gospels the exhortation to have to believe in a Resurrected Christ are NOT THE WORDS OF GOD.

Rather, they are simply the words of a former Pharisee who lived 2000 years ago. One Paul of Tarsus. Simply another old theologian. A man. A mortal. And most likely a self-loathing homosexual.

Well I still say you show way too much common sense to be a religious guy. But I agree with you on this, the part about Jesus being a great teacher, but only a man.

This is how I believe. I put him up there with the Buddha and MLK and Ghandi and Rumi and Confucious, et al. But no more. The idea if him being god has always struck me as preposterous.

Then again, I don't call myself a Christian. My fiance is Jewish, but is a Reform Jew. She feels the same way about Jesus, as do almost all the Jews. I always felt they should know better than anybody if he was the promised Messiah, since it was their people back then who wrote the Bible.

Jesus was a Jewish rabbi. Period. why some need to make him into more, much less a god is amazing. We might as well ask if Thor liked Swedish food or hamburgers.

LOL.

You are a Christian if you want to be, despite what anyone says.

You my friend are exactly right. Nobody on this Earth can dictate to a man what he needs to believe to call himself what he wants. Least if all some if the false prophets who plague this website.

God gave me free will. God saved me. I owe him. So I repay by devoting my efforts to separating wheat from chaff.

Chaff!! Be afraid. Be very afraid😥

Do you like talking to yourself? Kind of like how Jehovah witnesses feel when trying to dupe others to their cult, with doors getting slammed in their face..

You are so funny.
