"Just on the Cursing Part."

This is something that caught my eye.  The original argument was posted by iamdavidh, as a part of this debate.  Credit goes to him.

"Just on the cursing part.

I have a crazy idea.

Let's all realize that they are just words we made up, and there is absolutely nocurse placed on anyone who says these words.

If we just stop treating them like they're bad, tada, they won't be bad anymore.

Here, let's go through some samplse of what I mean.

"sex," "I don't like what just happened," and "I don't like you."

Are all perfectly acceptable, and all mean the exact same thing as.

"fuck," "fuck!," and "fuck you."

You'll notice the second group of phrases is far more efficient. Yet for some reason you can't use that second group.

Silly.

Here's another.

"poop," "I feel bad/ill/sick" "I really really don't like it/him/her."

Is all acceptable. What is not acceptable.

"shit," "I feel like shit," "what a piece of shit."

Again, they mean the exact same thing.

So why is one forbidden, and the other acceptable?

People really are still very superstitious. Imagine trying to explain the purpose of "curse words" to some alien intelligence. I for one would be embarassed by the whole thing."

So, what do you think about this argument?  Do you agree or disagree with him?  Why?

The whole idea is stupid. I understand that it is a cultural thing, and that most, if not all cultures have some kind of curse words, but why do we fear them so much? There will always be derogatory terms, but these words seem made up just to be a "bad word."

Does this mean I can make up my own "bad word?" OK, I will.

DOWNVOTE.

There. Now, whenever you want to say something sucks, say "That downvotes!"

Whenever you get fed up with someone, when they annoy you beyond belief, you could call them a downvoter.

If there is something disgusting on you, you could say "Eww! What is this downvote?!?"

This word is now worse than all of the other curse words. The worst of the worst , the class reserved only for sailors and drug dealers.

Have at it. Use it as you wish.

:)

Thanks. An invitation would have been nice though, I'm not dead.

Here's a cool link to the origins of some of these cursed words, link

Notice there's no mention of when the seemingly innocent collection of sounds became forbidden.

I'm sorry, I usually just invite the allies. I'll send you a request.

"bad language" is inherently arbitrary bullshit.

If you're talking about a penis, it's the same thing as a cock or a dick.

If you're talking about feces, it's the same thing as shit.

If you're talking about a female dog, it's the same thing as a bitch.

If you're talking about copulation, it's the same as fucking.

If you're talking about a vagina, it's the same thing as a cunt or a pussy.

Who decides which words are "bad"?

What are they, other than random combination of syllables and sounds?

What right does anyone have, and by what authority, to deem specific words "bad"?

Side: I Agree

The level of intensity between the two groups of words changes. The Cursing Group shows a person who is out of control. Above all else, hide your true emotions ;)

I do not think that people use them as they were meant in the past. When I tell that guy who just cut me off ' fuck you '. I am not wanting him to be cursed I am just showing my anger. I cuss all the time just like Pyg only I do not say some of the things he says. It is just a way to show your true emotions a little deeper than stubbing my toe and going ' OH MY GOODNESS THAT WAS PAINFULL! ' instead I would just go ' FUCK! ' to me it just shows stronger emotion, I am not thinking that I am putting a curse on anything when I say the words I am just expressing myself.

But that's the thing; it's just a word that many in our society have come to understand as an example of strong emotion. But still, there are others who retain the idea of these words as something terrible; words that are unacceptable to them in society.

It is obvious by the fact that you use these words as an expression for something as negligible as stubbing your toe that you do not place such a heavy meaning on these "bad words."

I cuss all the time, but i do it because cursing shows just how strong your statement is.

The fact that you are using a word that is taboo makes it way more stronger.

If we no longer saw the word "fuck" as bad, it would be just like "screw" or even worse "frick".

Now, I curse so much that i don't always say your standard curse words anymore because they are so often used that it really doesn't sound as strong anymore. everyone's used to it, no longer seen as bad.

So i say things even worse that I know will make people realize "holy shit, he means business".

for example, i stub my toe on a corner and i say "NIGGER RAPE". i don't mean it in a racist way, but my brain tells me that this is a very powerful word right here that shows just how much that fuckin' toe hurts.

The taboo on curse words only makes them stronger. If we take that out, people will just find new bad things to say, like "Shit on an Infant!" or "Sodomize children". yes, terms i use often, especially racist ones, cause people always see those as bad.

Side: I Disagree

You're like Shakespeare...but with racist curses.
