Kids Do not need Cellphones THE WAY THEY USE THEM: Texting tons, games, etc

Kids these days are very addicted. they want instant satisfaction and they want to be entertained by gadgets constantly. They don't do any thinking themselves, they don't create. They just take their little cellphone /smartphone everywhere and text, browse the web, play games, and they just becoming addicted.

I've heard some parents give them a phone for emergencies. yeah well NEWSFLASH, They're using it the phone 99% for games, and texting and interenet and music and nonsense.!!!

I do not see why anybody needs a cell phone. It is far more common for me to see cell phone use get people into a jam, rather than out of one. I adamantly refuse to own one, primarily because of my technophobia; essentially, I believe that when the robots rise up to fight against humanity, cell phones will lead the charge (figuratively speaking, of course).

Personally, my phone is immensely useful to me.

I use it to write essays while sitting in the car. I can then save that essay to the cloud and access it anywhere I want and continue t edit it on our computer. I can get directions to anywhere in the world. I use it to check my emails, check the weather, read books (I have 200 books on my phone), scan documents, take pictures for science lab reports, type CreateDebate arguments, research, do my math homework (multi-purpose graphing calculator app), record songs, make music, buy movie tickets, order pizza, check my homework, and fly to mars (very useful app)...

Now many of these apps save money (graphing calculator, camera, scanner, flash drive, notebook, paper, ink, etc), but mostly, it saves me time. I cam do all of those things from almost anywhere in the world. How many of the things I listed can you do without having to go home or buy equipment?

And yes, I do use use them to play games, text, etc, which I can do because of all the time my phone saves me...

No offense, but you don't have technophobia if you're sitting at the compute right now.

And phones are so useful. Now if we get a flat tire or broken down car, we don't have to stand there HOPING someone will stop and help. We pull out our cell phone and call for it.

Having a cell phone helps stay in contact with people in a way that land lines can't, you can talk to anyone at anytime and you can multi-task while on the phone.

If someone is lost, they can call someone instead of getting more lost.

A cell phone is great for people at school or work when there's an emergency and the lines are all used, so you can use your cell phone instead.

I'd like to see your CV before you attempt to diagnose me of anything.

Now if we get a flat tire or broken down car, we don't have to stand there HOPING someone will stop and help.

In other words, we no longer need to be self-sufficient.

Having a cell phone helps stay in contact with people in a way that land lines can't

And it helps in diminishing personal, human-to-human contact.

and you can multi-task while on the phone.

So friends and family don't deserve your undivided attention?

If someone is lost, they can call someone instead of getting more lost.

Maybe they wouldn't have gotten lost had they not been paying more attention to playing games/texting than they were to their surroundings. I can't tell you how many times I've heard of people driving into rivers, etc., simply because they paid more attention to their GPS than to the road.

A cell phone is great for people at school

Now you can get an A+, too, with this app for just $14.95!!!

when there's an emergency and the lines are all used, so you can use your cell phone instead.

Aren't children told not to use their cell phones during lock-downs at school?

Um.... what's the question here that we're supposed to debate? You never gave one.

Though I agree to some degree. I think it depends on the age though. Like, young children should just have those phones that have about three numbers on them for emergencies.

But old children, heading into the teens or actual teens, should be able to have texting and such. Maybe not ALL that you mentioned, but texting is okay I believe.

Jesus, for a reclusive person you seem to claim a lot about the practises of Kids.

How exactly can you make such a broad stroke generalisation? 99.9%, really? Where did this figure come from?

What's wrong with kids text messaging each other? It's not like they skip merrily through the cornfields and build rafts to float down the river chewing on long grass any more.

The world is becoming far more technologically advanced and people move with that, it's only blow-hard old farts that complain about progress, and this is because they are watching their way of life slipping away.

It's not like they skip merrily through the cornfields and build rafts to float down the river chewing on long grass any more.

And at any rate, why do we reflect so fondly upon such unproductive activities?

The same reason we reflect so fondly upon anything that is clearly obsolete now; most of us are arguably a bunch of nostalgic idiots that miss our childhoods, for whatever reason. Not that I have a problem with people missing their childhoods, I do at times, I just think it is a much more productive use of our time to progress rather than dwell on something long and gone.

I agree! Kids do not need cell phones. Its a distraction to learning in school and you can text some other time. Most of the people in my school are really addicted to there phone. I am the only one in my school that doesn't have a phone. I am happy without a phone and I don't need a phone. Plus many people who text too much will soon get glasses . Most of my classmates complain when they are at the back of the classroom "I can't see". I have perfect 20/20 vision and I don't want to ruin my vision.

Its a distraction to learning in school and you can text some other time.

This does not say anything about why kids need or do not need cellphones. A kid may need a cellphone, but can make the informed decision to choose to text at another time.

Most of the people in my school are really addicted to there phone.

This is textbook example of argumentum ad populum. Even if I were to accept that most of the people in you school are addicted to their phone, it still has no bearing on whether kids need cellphones or not.

I am happy without a phone and I don't need a phone.

Another fallacious statement. So what if you are happy without a phone? It's simply an appeal to emotion. Even if I were to accept that you're happy without a phone, (1) it still does not prove why kids do not need cellphones and (2) emotion has no bearing on whether a claim is true or not.

Plus many people who text too much will soon get glasses

The same is true for people who read a lot. Does it mean that people should not read?

That is not true. Reading too much can cause eye fatigue and headaches but no damage can occur to the eyeball itself. I have read for a long time books and I still have 20/20 vision.

Supporting Evidence: Can you damage your eyes if you read too much. (EzineArticles.com)

Although I take offense at the characterization of what "kids" use phones for (as I type this on my phone...), taking away someone's phone isn't going to solve the "problem." "We" will just "waste" time by other means, namely computers. The only way to "solve" this "problem" is to eradicate all forms of technology in the teenagers' lives. That's not exactly practical.

The quotes just denote what I personally disagree with the characterization of.

Nobody needs a cellphone, it is a want. Things like food and water are needs, a necessity to life. Televisions, phones, chairs and other such things are only a product of mankind's greed for ridiculous amounts of next to useless possessions, not that that's a bad thing of course, greed is awesome ;)
