In my point of view bro its more respectful. and yes, usually I adress someone as dude if i dont know him. because I can't call anyone as bro. maybe its because of our mentality and traditions. oh yeah i am from east.

I'm not so fond of being called by any handle other than my name, but if I had to choose I think Bro is a more embracing and friendly term. Dude is patronizing, like buddy, kid, pal, squire , my good man, dear boy or mate. Hey ''DUDE'', what's your problem? See you ''PAL'' , you're asking for it. Recently someone referred to me as brother. I started my reply by telling him that I wasn't his brother, nor was I his anything. I don't know much American slang, only lousy and swell.
