Mark 11:12-14

Could a Christian please explain this one to me? I came accross it recently and it really just seems like Jesus yelling at a tree...

"12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs.14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it."

Am I missing something?

He should've grabbed a Snickers.. You're not you when you're hungry ;)

Basically God made everything to do something. plants grow for oxygen, herbivores eat them to keep the population in balance, carnivores for the same reason, etc...

This fig tree's duty is to provide fruit, and here we see that its not doing that. So in Jesus' eyes the fig tree is "lazy", not doing its job, disobedient. So you could say that Jesus has "fired" the tree from its job of making fruit by killing it. Lesson to take home: do what you're supposed to do.

"When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs"

If it was not the season for bearing fruit, then how was it failing to do what it was supposed to do?
