It is a good use of time because many pastors or people from a church want to help people and spread the Word of God around so they can have more people in different countries believing in Jesus. They also help the poor in the countries and give them food and healthy water so I think its a good use of time.

The right kind of missionary work can be extremely helpful to people. Now I don't mean going over there and not helping, handing out Bibles etc. I have never been on this kind of missions trip, so I really have no idea what goes on on those ones... The ones I have been on have been strictly volunteer work. Counseling sessions for kids who come from abusive homes, camps for kids that have barely known peace because of home situations. Those are the kinds of missions trips that are worth something.

I meant a kind of missions trip where you don't do much of anything to actually help a person situation. I'm all for handing out bibles, but you better be doing something like fixing the persons roof, opening a temporary soup kitchen etc. Really I mean the types of trips where people go just to see a new place, half handedly hand out bibles, and really do not make much of a positive impact.

Is it better than playing computer games. It is better than debating about missionary work? How about sitting around drinking beer? I can find a million things worse than help those in need. What would Mother Teresa say?

If those that hate religion would do as much for helping others, I'd have no problem with it. Missionary work only goes hand in hand with thinking of others before yourself, think this capable of an atheist. Prove it.

I think that going to an underdeveloped country to help out is a very good thing to do, however going over there with bibles in hand telling the people that all their solutions are going to be solved by praying to your god is just terrible

Going to help for a small amount of time only instills hope into those-less-fortunate; it isn't a solution.

Side: Bad use of time

I agree with helping those 'less fortunate' in 3rd world countries to a degree, but preying on the weak and telling them to turn to God is the lowest form of religious recruitment. One of the many, many, many reasons I hate all religious organizations.

what about groups like the Mormon Helping Hands Group, from what I have heard is that they go to these countries and hand them food, water, clothing and other things that they need. But only when they are asked about their religion do they share their religous views with them and offer the Book of Mormon to them and if they say No its fine with them.

If it was actually with the idea of helping them, then yes.

But I know a lot of churches have the idea of "If we help them, they'll see the light"
