Must we kill Osama bin Laden...

...In order to win the war in Afghanistan or is breaking the Taliban sufficient?  Can we even win this war?

I personally don't think we can win this war without killing Osama bin Laden. I doubt that breaking or crippling the Taliban or Al-Qaeda would be considered a win for us. Given the topography of the region I don't think we can smoke them all out of their mountainous dugouts or small villages without great loss of life to our soldiers. I think I've lost the objective to this mission!!!

What are you talking about? How could crippling the Taliban or Al-Qaeda ever not be the win? It's the whole point. Osama is a personality, he doesn't exert influence anymore, and truth be told is probably already dead. Muslim Totalitarianism, religious like Al-Qaeda or political like the Taliban, is the enemy.

I hear what you're saying hamandcheese but I worry that because they are so scattered if we'll ever be able to crush them. I don't know if bin Laden is dead or not but if he isn't, wouldn't he always be at the center of the rallying cry for the Taliban and Al-Qaeda?

There is no doubt in my mind that he should be executed by a firing squad or by hanging. Why? Because simply wiping out the Taliban is not going to stop bin laden's world-wide terrorist organization. Al Quaeda is international, not regional. If we really wanted to hurt these murderous psychopaths, you got to hit them where it hurts the most: $$$$$$$....which primarily comes from heroin trade and private donations from wealthy sheiks and similar. No money, no weapons, no traveling.

In southeast europe, especially in so-called Kosovo, heroin trade is the main export, something that 99 percent of the world does not know. The main route is Afghanistan-Turkey/Iran-Kosovo/Albania-Western and Central Europe. We ourselves are helping these killing psychopaths to do this by allowing these heroin-trading regimes to continue this type of business as long as we consider them allies and they are laughing at us and saying "damn, if they only knew".....how stupid are we getting?

We will never disrupt the Taliban. They are like cockroaches. If we kill this basturd then we will show the Taliban that no one is safe when leading these terrorist.

Yes, let's do "drastic action X" and watch the Afghan people throw away centuries of culture of local warlords, embrace western-style democracy, and rejoice as McDonalds spontaneously pop everywhere overnight.

The cold, unpleasant truth is that there's nothing to win there, particularly not by quick and forceful military action.

Osama bin Laden is just a figurehead. He might already be dead, he might not, and it doesn't make a lick of difference.

Last thing I heard of Osama he was broke and on the run. The man has lost his power and is now only a symbol. While killing him would allow those who lost loved ones in 911 to have some closure, his death is no longer necessary military wise.

Kill Osama Bin Laden and you'll turn him into a martyr. Especially in countries where people aren't as educated and in intense poverty. When you're on the edge, you grab for the first hand that offers you 'help'.
