Even if number one ace and the smartest guy in the world - without connections - still unemployed or under employed?

As with everything else you need at least a certain set of qualifications to get a job, but having connections can always grease the wheels

In age where dishonesty is the current policy, all you need is a drinking buddy to get a job. No degree or experience will ever trump buying someone a beer.

I can see that favoritism is more important than merit. That is the current policy.

I'd rather hire someone I didn't know that had relevant experience and/or a willingness to learn, than a friend/relative of a friend. The former is a new working relationship that you build together, whereas the latter is potentially a can of worms.

Granted, that's not a foregone conclusion, but I'd rather be dealing with someone on my own terms rather than having to temper my decisions for the sake of friend/family politics.

Getting bribed to give someone a job?!? That's a new one on me! =)

Getting bribed to give someone a job is not new, in fact it has been done for centuries. Ever hear of a kick-back?

Sorry: it would be new to me, personally. I didn't mean to imply it's never happened, just that I'd probably stand there slack jawed if someone tried bribing me for a job.

Here's help on protecting yourself from job scams - see the link for the info.

The FTC urges job seekers to be aware of the red flags that may signal a job scam:

* If firm wants you to pay for placing you with a company

- truth is, they’re only selling information about looking for a job—information that’s generally available for free.

No you need to know what you are looking for, how to look for it and remember that if you have to pay to find a job then you are being scammed. No job agency should be requesting payment for something they are paid to help you do anyway. I personally wouldn't pay anyone to get me a job. As the lead Job recruiter in my job I get offered money to get people in but thats not how I like to run things.
