Obama cutting summer vacation and adding 3 hours of schoolday

Keep in mind, I don't know if this is true. I heard about this on a facebook page. If you find info on what Obama wants to do, feel free to explain in more detail.

But tell me what you think of this rumor. Thanks -Jake.

I know he's at least thinking about it. We have to do something about our education system. We're falling behind.

Studies have shown clear benefits to increasing time spent in school.

side benefit to shortening the length of summer vacation - reduction in childhood weight gain during those months:

I visited my high school today and it reminded me how much I hated going to school every morning. But looking back on it, I feel like I didn't have enough time in school. It flew by so quickly!

That's personal though. On a national level, we definitely need longer days and/or shorter vacations. Ideally, I would like to see shorter breaks from school, but more often. Rather than summer, winter, and spring breaks, schools can give students 3-day weekends all year or a week off for all major holidays and other random weeks off. What is the point in summer vacation?!

Side: Like it

i like the idea of shorter more frequent breaks too - I think it will have more of a stimulative effect on the economy since more parents will be able to take that time off with their kids and go on vacations etc. rather than just sending them off to summer camp.

I know that something needs to be done about education. And I like his overall goal. But I don't think that this is a good Idea.

Student's need a break when it comes to the schedule of things. It's just too much. And to take away summer just is ridiculous. Don't think this is some kiddy rebellious rant, I already graduated from public school. If I logically thought it was a good idea, I would be all for it even if it meant kids having to do more. I just don't think it will work. Kids need to breathe.

I think that the problem lies in what kids are doing in school, not how long they are there.

There is too much emphasis on arts and sports. There was a guy in my high school that was a senior and didn't know what a democracy was. And they where letting him play basketball. If you can pass and not know basic things like that, there's a problem.

Sure kids need a break once in a while. But a three month break? Please. Most adults are lucky if they get two weeks off in a year.

I agree with you that athletics tends to be over-emphasized.

"a three month break?"

Well these days most kids only have 2 months. It has decreased over the years.

I think a good compromise would be to take away summer break, but also make the days/and or weeks shorter. That way they don't have months to fry their brains and forget everything and they still aren't overwhelmed.

But something just feels wrong with doing away with summer break. It's like it's part of our culture or something. ..Maybe I just hate change I don't know.

Only those parents who dont want their kids around would want something so stupid.

Like those parents who spit out babies then throw them into childcare at two weeks of age , then on weekends have them in activities that furthermore means less time with their child , and then school camp during school break. IF OBAMA WANTS THIS THEN HE JUST WANTS MORE TIME AWAY FROM HIS OWN KIDS .

i don't think this is the case. single-parent families, families where both parents work, or even families where one parent works and one parent stays home but thinks their child learns more in an environment with trained educators might want there child to have a different school year if they think it will make them more successful in life. it may help them spend more time with their child instead of sending the kid away to summer camp.

is not the school's fault, is not the kids fault, its the parents

fault for not making there kids go to bed early

I really dont understand why some people have kids.

What do these parents think of their kids , As trinkets for their own acheivement ?

Why have a kid if all you want to do is spend f-a time with it ?

Once a kid starts school you dont get to see the kid for a full day , then they come home , do their homework w/e , have dinner , go to bed and get up the next day for another 8 hour day . (sounds like employment)

I kept my kids home til schoolage . The first five years of each of their lives was still in my hands.

Then they started school and i felt like i would die , there life in the big world had begun.

I would pull my kids out of any school that took more time away from me and my kids.

As i said those parents may as well be just having kids to give to the government.

They are not parents they are vending machines for breeding kids as trophies.

(ooh look at my awsome child , doesnt his achievements make me the best parent )

MAKES ME SICK !

Considering they have fuk all time with their child , how can they think they are the be all and endall of their childrens life achievments.

They basically let the system rear their kid.

I feel so sorry for the ones sent off to boarding schools. Their parents are cold , very cold.

I guess I could support cutting summer vacation, but having kids go to school for over nine hours a day would be too much.

watching the video - i didn't see him say kids should go to school "over nine hours a day", and you support cutting summer - so isn't your post in the wrong column?

Kids are already spending most of their nights doing homework. Why not just lay off and let them be kids? My entire family is doing alright after having a childhood of normal school days, who's to say that forcing even more would be a benefit?

It is now 2015 and the President never implemented such a tactic.
