Of The Pope, Condoms and Other Things

In Africa, the Pope has proclaimed the use of condoms in the fight against AIDS not an acceptable method of protection.  He stands by the Church's ruling on their use and goes so far as to say that AIDS will not be overcome by the use of condoms!  Africa has been ravaged by the disease, and most especially in the sub-Sahara region.  In Africa, 25 million people have succumbed to the disease while 22.5 million more suffer from HIV.  The Pope does not explain his statement on the use of condoms to either quell or defeat AIDS while some Catholic Church leaders have called for their use only by married, heterosexual couples with one partner having the disease.

I am not Catholic but I am a Christian.  While I understand, to some extent the Catholic Church's stand on birth control using outside devices, I cannot quite understand the Pope's stand on this.  Should we use condoms as a device with which to control the spread of AIDS or any STD or should we listen to the Pope whose views seem to be contradictory to the Church's own leaders?

UGH!

Being raised Catholic, having a very Catholic family, they are very close to my heart.

But it may very well be the most insane religion in the history of mankind.

I cannot even wrap my head around the amount of reality one has to ignore to be against condoms anywhere, and especially in a place where AIDS is more prevalant than the cold.

I'm so so tired of saying this. But it needs to be said.

People not using condoms never has and never will stop them from having sex.

You can both be against unmarried sex, and at the same time allow people, who are going to have sex either way, to have condoms.

I believe everyone should do what their conscience bids them to do and what their common sense begs them to do. In today's world we live in danger of so many life threatening diseases that if one condom can save one life it stands to reason that we should be using them or any other device which will help in eradicating this monstrous killer.

"But it may very well be the most insane religion in the history of mankind."

No, I'm pretty sure the most insane religion is Islam.

"People not using condoms never has and never will stop them from having sex."

The thing is they give these african people condoms but they don't use them. You're argument is a false dilemma because not only should they be given condoms and taught how to properly use them but they should also be taught abstinence inorder to quell STDs.

"For, it turns out that while STD infections are a principal cause of women's sterility, chronic disease and early death, condoms afford girls and women categorically no protection from seven of the eight STD's studied, even when used faultlessly 100 percent of the time."

The point wasn't what they give the African people, the point was what the Pope dictated to them in a country very heavily impacted by these diseases.

Really? What do you know about the Islamic religion? I'm assuming you only know that some terrorists are Islamic, but that has little to do with the religion... So explain to me what's crazier about it, I'm genuinely interested because I think all religion is crazy personally. Just that some are even crazier than others.

No, it's not a false dilemma, because some people do use them, and so it inevitably does save some lives. The logic of not giving them condoms because some people don't use them makes about as much sense as not vaccinating anyone because it only works on 50% of the people vaccinated, understand? The pope doesn't want to both educate on use of condoms, and encourage abstinence. It's the Catholic position that condoms are a sin, and ef 'em if it saves a few lives. That's the argument, and it's insane.

Again, even if your last quote wasn't completely wrong, it would be dumb not to use a condom because it only protects from some disease, and not all of them.

But, that said, your source is full of crap. It's a religious propaganda site with the goal of excusing the inexcusable stance that no one should use condoms because it's a sin, by lying about the effectiveness of a condom.

Here's a real source.

I'll just add that I am a Catholic and I listen and follow the Pope... sometimes. I've often thought of converting to Protestantism because I just don't like how the Pope says something and I must follow it. As for this debate, go ahead and use the condoms. If it can practically slow down the progression of AIDS, it should be done. I don't find condoms unethical, so I believe they should be used for that reason.

I'm not Catholic, but I don't know if I could handle following the Pope, either. Following my parents is enough work for me. ;)

...and that is precisely the logic that should be used in this case. Thank-you for sharing that, as a Catholic.

Side: Yes - Use Them

As much as I hate condoms, they are a necessity for those who would prefer to not live on a drug cocktail or have an unwanted pregnancy.

This is the best point made on this thread so far. Africa is getting screwed again.

Yes abstinence and staying with just one sex partner is the best way to prevent AIDS from spreading. But as we all know, this is not always working all the time. I believe that the use of condoms could prevent these from spreading more even. This could not be the perfect solution but it is proven to minimize the spread of it.

I think the Pope is extremely mislead by claiming what he's claimed. Perhaps his goal by claiming so was to convince them to not have sex at all. Unless he has some secret goal for all of Africa to die of the disease or something. Condoms do plenty; use them. However, I can see how you could still catch HIV after sex with a condom if it's not taken off and discharged properly. The virus is in the semen and just because it didn't get in the vagina, don't mean it's doesn't have exposure left... because it's probably all over the condom and at the tip of the penis. And unless Africans have the ability to wash themselves regularly, unsanitation could still be causing it to spready regardless of condom usage.

Side: Yes - Use Them

Don't use them.

1. I'm in a monogamous, healthy relationship so their use doesn't affect me.

2. There are way to many people on the planet. Especially stupid people. If you're dumb enough to not use them, well then, we'll make do without you.

3. My argument stands out on this side because no one has posted here.

4. I like being controversial ;)

But Joe...This debate involves millions of others who are not as lucky as you are. You're not being controversial, you're being quite thoughtless. When one person has AIDS/HIV has sex with others that do not know this, hundreds die...not just one.

The idea is to not have sex. The number one way to not get AIDS or any other STD is to not have sex.
