I think it is waste of time and money. Many other problems and global concerns should be given priority to this luxury.

A "waste of money" usually means that the money is spent on less important ventures rather than important ones. :D

What's "important"?

Side: yes

I bet the engineers, construction workers and other personnel involved in its construction don't think its waste of money. Nor would the folks who benefit from the extra tourism and traffic in that part of town.

Except that many major international sports events such as these tend to displace the people who lived there to begin with, often without any substantive resettlement program. Certainly, there are some people being employed in the construction of these behemoth arenas but if the same amount of money were directed into projects that would actually benefit local residents those jobs would still be created without the detriment to the affected communities. Of course, good luck actually raising equivalent funds for such projects; people prefer their sports to confronting problems.

Its a fair point. I personally have very little knowledge regarding gentrification policies, so its hard for me to really respond. I lived briefly in a gentrified neighborhood in Chicago, and it seemed beneficial for that neighborhood from what I could gather from long term residents. But surrounding neighborhoods...not so sure about what they had to go through. Chicago DOES have a significant homeless population.
