Optimism and Pessimism are two halves of the same coin.

When someone is being optimistic, it's because they are avoiding any negative thoughts about the future. To avoid something you must be aware of it, meaning, the person is having pessimistic thoughts and is trying to drown them out with idealism.

Same for pessimism. The person is trying to avoid any positive thoughts of the future, that she is having.

So really, optimism and pessimism are the same thing, but they are wearing different masks is all.

I wouldn't say that an optimist tries to ignore negative thoughts of the future, nor do pessimists ignore positive ones.

An optimist and pessimist look at the same situation, and an optimist focuses on the positive outcomes and possibilities, while a pessimist focuses on the negative outcomes and possibilities. Neither ignore the other, they just see one as more prominent.

and an optimist focuses on the positive outcomes and possibilities

To focus on something means to view the whole image then place awareness on specific parts. It would follow that they are ignoring the other parts. If they aren't ignoring the other parts, but are still viewing the situation, then that means they are focusing on the positive and negative still.

Your argument, is in nature, contradictory.

The pessimist doubts the coin is real, the optimist hopes its value has gone up.

I could just as easily say that the optimist doubts the coin is real, because the existence of said coin, would cause their happy idealistic future to become only a dream.

No, you couldn't. :)

Side: no

In my opinion, optimism and pessimism are the direct opposites and cannot be shared by the same coin.

Please explain how you came to that conclusion.

Note, that these words describe things objectively, and are not based on subjectivity. These aren't words like, "good" and "bad" which can only be applied subjectively.
