Participation Trophies are a waste and give children undeserved praise
If you have young children who play little league (or whatever league toddlers play in) sports, then you know what I'm taling about. Those little participation trophies awarded to the losers at the end of a season. For those of you who don't have young children who play sports, at the end of every season, the members of the winning team get a trophies for winning, and the members of all the losing teams get plastic trophies for "Participation".
They are in other competetive-type things, like spelling bees or science fairs, but sporting tournaments are the biggest offenders.

This is absolutely true. The whole point of sports is not to give everyone a prize, it is to reward the winners and the winners alone. If a child gets a reward no matter what they do, how motivated will the child be about winning? Let me tell you: Not very. The participation trophy reminds me of communism. You work hard and win, and you get the same thing as the slacker who sat in the far edge of the field and played with the dandelions. Are we really willing to risk having our children grow up content with failing? Do we really want them to think "Oh, I just completely messed up my life. It's ok though, I'll still end up fine even if I don't do anything about it". I know I wouldn't. And what's more, children should not be mollycoddled their whole lives. I've never really been one for "character building", but I think it is important that children learn failure isn't acceptable in real life. In real life there will be no trophies for the people who sit and poke people on facebook all day. There will however be social security, but that's another debate entirely. Side: Yes they are
