Pharmaceutical companies are drug pushers who should be held criminally accountable

So long as people are imprisoned for dealing harmful drugs, the big drug pushers should also be subject to imprisonment. I know so many kids strung out on dangerous psyche meds who would do so much better if they just had parents who didn't try to treat behavioral problems with dangerous drugs that are proven to have terrible side effects, but instead were encouraged to just fucking discipline their kids. End of rant.

I disagree based on personal experiance. I was once on (but no longer am) prescription psych meds for depression and anxiaty. The pills did have side effects on me, but that is why they are prescription (and why not all drugs should just be made legal). I was lucky in that i was eventually able to get off the pills, but i have family memebers who have been dianoissed with biopolar disorder who need those pills to function.

I am sorry to hear that you were not given better options than to be drugged, but I am glad to hear that you no longer see a need (like drug addicts do) to escape undesireable mental states through drugs. I hope your other family members come to realize that it is only in very rare cases that drugs are prefereable to cognitive therapy. Contrary to what you have been told by the big drug pusher's medically licensed salesforce, bipolar disorder can and should...in almost all cases be controlled without drugs.

I also have family member who have bipolar disorder yet have never been given medication for it. It is a chemical problem that you can not just will away because it dictates how you think and see things.

When i was taking those prescription meds, i saw how large an impact chemcals play in our emotional state. There were times where i was consciously trying to feel one emotion that logically i felt i should feel, yet i could not get past another. That is what it is like to have a chemical imbalance.

In a perfect world, more people'd have the understanding and techniques to deal with mental problems without resorting to drugs. That being said, most parents these days are terrible and they should be held accountable for the things they sign their kids up to take. As for the big companies, they're not exactly doing anything wrong. They're providing quick fixes for people who want quick fixes.

From my personal experience, I have been on anti-depression and anxiety medication. But it disgusted me. I was happy when I was on them, yeah, but I couldn't think straight. And whenever I came down, it felt so bad. So. About four months after being on them, I just quit cold turkey. Which is, by the way, quite a ride. Moving my eyes caused jolts down my spine. Every little noise caused me to grow irritable, and I wanted to strangle anyone who said anything remotely stupid. And that went on for two weeks. Still. There are people out there who aren't as strong or as clever to deal with these problems. It's taken me years to come to terms with my depression. I'm never going to be an ecstatic and bubbly person. And I'm going to stay awake at night depressed and worried. But. That's my burden and I can handle it. Other, weaker people might blow their own brains out or shoot up a school.

Drug 'em up and inflict some cognitive behavioral therapy smackdowns on them.

You see that there are improvements to be made to the way these conditions are treated, but apparently don't recognize that reliance on drugs to "treat" such problems is actually just a way of masking the problem as opposed to correcting it.

The chain of blame is too long to hold those responsible accountable

Well they are arguably just as bad as many drug dealers currently locked up for selling illegal drugs.

The real reasons for being mentally disturbed do not go away by taking drugs and the drugs only hide the mental turmoil temporarily. Without a healthy way to process the underlying causes, a terrible climax is practically guaranteed. Not saying that only drugged up people have serious psychotic episodes, or that drugs are the root cause of such episodes, but drugs are too often merely a way of hiding the problem so that we can pretend it doesn't exist for a little longer.

S'what the CBT is for.

I'm far too tired to get into an argument over much anything else, but I'll say something along the lines of 'buyer beware.' And that the field of psychology is full of poor practices because the mind is a terribly hard thing to figure out.

The drugs do help people. It's a crutch. Not something people are meant to take forever, but something that helps them maintain their life while they seek real help.
