Political correctness is really just being polite.

Political correctness is what my grandmother called "Being polite".

We live in a diverse society. We need to maintain some level of peace and order and accommodate our differences for the sake of getting along. Calling people disparaging names is just rudeness, plain and simple. People who think they can avoid being "politically correct" are really just rude assholes.

Sorry, I called them "assholes". That's impolite. How about, "Their personalities are 'anally challenged'? No, that sounds retarded. I'll have to work to find a nice way to call someone an idiot. :)

They have the right to freedom of speech - by forbidding certain words they are ruining everything for which America stands.

Do some research into exactly what Americans' rights are under the first amendment. The fact is, nobody has absolute "freedom of speech".

1. You can't libel or slander someone without being taken to court and being liable for damages.

2. You can't yell "Fire" in a crowded theater. (The classic example of limits to free speech).

3. Court cases have upheld the right of schools to censor student speech they find disruptive.

4. Businesses can fire employees who make disparaging comments about them.

5. Businesses have the right and obligation to forbid employees from engaging in hate speech for one, sexually harassing speech for another.

"The right to freedom of speech" is only our right to be free of government interference in our public expression.

However, employees do not have the right to say anything they like at their place of employment. Even government employees do not have the freedom of speech at work. Teachers are government employees and they must abide by the standard of behavior and ethics of their profession and of their employers.

That is the case in the debate you started about freedom of speech.

So, we need to correctly understand what freedom of speech really allows, and we should really try to be kind to one another -- or at least be polite.

As grandma always said, "If you can't say something nice about someone, then shut the fuck up."

Political correctness is the norm of the 21st century. If someone says the wrong thing, he or she will suffer the repercussions.
