Popeye the Sailor was technically a superhero!
Here is my argument. popeye was a superhero.
1. He fought for the helpless and downtrodden.
2. He had an arch enemy
3. Once he ate spinach he had super human strength, speed etc.
4. not the only superhero that would require some kind of device of item to get powers. (Ironman, Green Lantern, shazzam)
Yes he was!

I know that he is a hero. I believe he is also "super" because he had unbelievable strength after eating spinnach. The Hulk had unbelieve strength and he is considered a super hero. These two people are comparable by the fact that they both have unbelievable strength caused by an certain effect. For Popeye, it was spinach. For Hulk, it was anger. Side: Yes he was!

Ok, firstly, Iron Man and Green Lantern both had material objects that permanently changed the way they acted and interacted with their surroundings. Popeye wolfs down a can of spinach and gets a hard on just long enough to kick someone's ass. If he was a real superhero, his spinach powers would last his entire life. Secondly, Popeye didn't have a costume, he had a sailor's uniform, so no way he could be a superhero. Thirdly, he doesn't go out looking for trouble and picking on bad guys. He just wants to live his life with Olive Oyl. It just so happens that Bluto makes that very difficult for him almost every day of the year, so Popeye is forced to suck down some spinach and dish out an ol' fashioned ass whoopin'. Thus I have spoken, and because of these reasons and more, Popeye the sailor man is NOT and never WILL be a superhero. Side: No he was not!

I have some other examples of superheros that may fit my argument. 1. The Mask his super Powers came strictly from the items he used. 2. Shazzam was a kid in real form who became a superhero with the word "Shazzam!" 3. Underdog who was only a superhero with his special ring. Also as far as costumes. Ever see the tv show Heroes or the movie Unbreakable. Non costumed super heroes! Side: Yes he was!
