Prison time and accommodations
Right now prisoners are held in prison for a certain amount of time with other people and are allowed time to exercise and enjoy some sort of "free" time. Would it be a good idea to get rid of jail cells with two people in them, which is neighbored to other cells just like it, and put every criminal in solitary confinement. Instead of allowing prisoners time to exercise and spend time with other inmates, why not just put them all in lock down and confine them for a shorter amount of time? That would free up some prison space and would allow for prison tax funding to go down. It would be extreme psychological punishment but would keep them away from other inmates who could potentially physically injure them.

There are probably some prisoners who would prefer to be in solitary confinement, for the safety reason you mentioned and I think they should have that option without having to be a snitch or something to get into protective custody. However, putting all prisoners in solitary confinement for their entire prison term could be dangerous. Without any socializing many people can lose their minds, and it probably isn't wise to punish criminals by making them bat-shit crazy and then letting them loose on society. Side: No
