Public healthcare spending per capita in countries with Universal Health Care is less than in countries without it. For whatever reason (lack of a drive for profit, most likely), public healthcare is considerably cheaper than private. In the USA, you have Medicaid and Medicare. The US government subsidize these at a cost to the taxpayer, per capita, which is higher than the cost per capita of the NHS in the UK. Why? Because hospitals in the USA are run for profit: the shareholders demand more money, so they charge more for meds and procedures, and the government, when people can't make payment, foots the bill. Then the government load the bill off onto you -- the patient -- and over half the time, you declare bankruptcy because you can't afford to pay the money back. The government loses out, you lose out, and joe taxpayer down the street loses out. All of this is just a gigantic transfer of wealth from you and the other taxpayers, into the hands of private companies. In a public healthcare system, things work a little differently. Everyone pays a percentage of their wages in tax towards funding a public healthcare system, no dodgy insurers, no drive for profits, and so people collectively spend less money than they would on expensive private health insurance and on surgeries or procedures that aren't covered by it. It's not that difficult to understand. If a hospital is driven by a need for corporate profit, they're gonna charge you a lot more for procedures and medications than an institution that's transparent and driven by public interest. The same for insurers: they'll try anything to get away without paying for your healthcare. These are just some of the reasons why the biggest cause of bankruptcy in the USA is medical costs. So, no, while public healthcare isn't "free" (it's paid for by taxes), it is exceptionally cheaper for the tax-payer than a hybrid system or a purely private system. Side: Progressives.

Progressive ideals reflect the statement "stronger together". Conservative ideals reflect the statement "Every person for them self". I believe in progressive values because as a society we should work together to accomplish more, not fight for the top spot. Side: Progressives.
This is a massive oversimplificating of the difference between a left and right wing. It is more much complexicatifying than "stronger together" vs "everyone for themselves" It is collectivism vs individualism. Too much of either is bad you are an idiot You want a degree of personal freedoms then you shouldn't want so much collectivism. You want to have cohesive society you don't want so many indevudeliysam Side: Conservatives.
