Public Schools new lunch menu (Mrs.Obamas healthy eating)

I am asking this because this topic has hit headlines lately and I personally pay for two kids to eat lunch at school. It cost about $900 bucks for the school year, now this may not seem like a lot to some of you, but when your kids are already healthy and fit, because we own our own ranch and both the boys are out side working and if they are not working we are playing out doors. I realize that there are allot of family's that use TV and video games to babysit there kids. But for the ones of us that don't, why punish the rest of us with food that the kids just are not eating. To me this is a family matter not a government matter. If the government was paying for the lunch bill then that would be different. But they are not... as you can tell I'm agaiant this in a big way, I have had people tell me to make my kids lunch, we'll i shouldn't have to, I pay regardless I get that, and I could make there lunch and save money, but this is about our rights as Americans. The government has no right to come in and dictate what we eat.

Public schools are government funded. Are you suggesting that public schools change their cafeterias into full-blown restaurants, where children can order from a broad menu of selections?

If not, the status quo is already 'what is served is what is served' in public schools. When the government is funding and accrediting these institutions, it is wholly reasonable for them to regulate the type of food served.

It's not your only option.

You can pack a lunch for your child.

You can home-school your child and handle lunches yourself.

You can enroll your child in a private school and be subject to their policies regarding lunches rather than the governments.

What is the problem here? "It's different and I don't like it" really doesn't seem to be sufficient here.

It's more than different, it's controlling. And who funds the government?? We do, we pay there wages, we pay taxes and that's how the schools get there money.. The bigger picture is that they want to run our schools into the ground. The lunches are nasty. Plain and simple! You must not have kids and there for you don't get it. You picked me out because of my user name and now your following me around on here. I am new to this site but I'm not new to simple minded ignorant liberals!

Question: How is the prior set of regulations regarding public school lunches any less controlling than the current set? Yes, the people pay the governments wages- the people as a whole. That means that, like it or not, sometimes our taxes will pay for something that we don't personally support- case in point being these lunches. Maybe you feel you should have a say in what is served in school lunches because of your tax contribution- and you're probably right, to an extent- but you're hardly the sole person paying these taxes. If we wanted to base it off of tax contributions, would you be comfortable with the idea of the lower income families who essentially get all of their taxes refunded having no say, while the extremely wealthy have an individually much bigger vote than the middle classes due to their higher individual tax contributions?

How does the government benefit in any way by 'running our schools into the ground?' I seriously question that there is any intent here.

Define 'nasty' too- is it somehow worse than the many times reheated greasy mess they called pizza when I was in school? I find it highly unlilely that it is significantly worse than its predecessor even subjectively, and certainly not objectively.

Not only do I have kids, but I also work in education- so I suppose that I get it a bit more than you do, eh?

As for your username- didn't even notice it until you replied to me. I see the debates in the new or active list, and if they catch my attention and I feel I have an informed opinion, I post on them. Did you think your username offended me? I oppose Obama and most of his policies personally, but I'm not so short-sighted as to unilaterally pre-judge anything with the name 'Obama' attached to it. I'm more of a moderate than a liberal, and I lean conservatively on several issues.

If you're worried about people 'following you around' I would suggest looking at a few different debates. Some of us have a tendency to comment on most debates in circulation. I daresay this is the first time I've had a direct dialogue with this particular persona- perhaps are you confusing this account with one of your other ones?

I don't understand what your problem is. You seem to be complaining that schools both provide and don't provide lunch. Are you mad because it is only s variety of food that fat people should be eating and no "junk" good for the skinny kids?

Honestly, this is not an important enough topic for libertarians or liberals or conservatives or whatever to be discussing compared to other heated debates. If you are experiencing difficulties with your local school's food, either you yourself prepare the lunches for your children or just ask the people themselves. When you have already asked the people and you still find trouble with this menu, please just bear it and move on with your children's education.

Ask your children about it. If you have and they gave you a negative response, tell them you will just prepare lunch for them. Because if you have enough time in your schedule to debate over this topic, you should have enough time to prepare lunch.

I do not support Obama's ideals either, but this is something that should be up to the PEOPLE and not to the authority. Yes, the First Lady might not prepare the best food, but the problem is not the food itself, just how she is trying to provide food herself instead of appointing more experienced health experts or cooks to deal with the food problems.

President Obama is dumb enough. Michelle Obama is even dumber. When I was in school I packed every day because I got more food for a cheaper price an I got what I wanted. At my school a bland tasteless and stale lunch cost 3.50. A standard lunch for me was a sandwich, water, protein bar.

Bread-2.50

Meat 1lb-5.50

Water- basically free

12 pk protein bar- 6.00 dollars

Now when you add this up it is over 3.50 but it got me like 6-7 lunches. Then I was questioned as to why I packed by school authorities. I said the food tastes like crap and it's expensive. If the gov. Keeps putting their nose in my diet pretty soon you will have to buy lunch like in Chicago.

I don't believe it's the governments business to say what kids can and can not eat. I've even heard of kids passing out because they are not eating enough calories in the day because of this program.

Let's face it, if a teenage kid is going to each junk, he is going to eat junk no matter how hard you try for him or her not eating crap.

Finally someone who understands were I am coming from. The kids are fighting back on this issue. And it really does not help when the White House FB page posted a pic of there dogs sitting at a fancy table eating food that appears to be way better than most Americans can afford. This argument is far from over, not on this site but in our lives. I have taught my kids to eat what they are given and to be thankful as we'll. my 15 year old made a choice 4 years ago to not drink pop, as well as anything that have caffeine and high amounts of sugar. He made this choice on his own, I'm so proud of him. There comes a time when parents need to provide better food options for there kids, and it has to be when they are young. It's sad when the step in and start telling us what to feed are kids. But like you said, teens will eat junk if they want to. And there is nothing the government can do about that. Being healthy starts at home before kids enter school.

If you don't like school lunches, you can pack your own. I agree that school lunches are unhealthy and bad so instead of buying lunches, I just pack my own. Some people might say that it takes too long, but how long does it take to make a sandwich? 5 minutes max. And by making your own lunch, you will be spending a bit less or equal to the amount of money you spend on school lunches, so don't go on saying that you can't afford to make your own lunch. And there are healthy items at my school such as: yogurt, carrots, oranges, and apples. How is it the school lunches fault that kids sometimes choose to eat junk food? Just cuz school lunches offer SOME junk food options doesn't mean that you HAVE to take it. Parents should teach their kids to make healthy choices. Kids may not listen to you but you need to MAKE them listen(as long as it isn't abuse)

I believe that children should have healthy options and more traditional options. But I also believe that children should be educated in nutrition in public schools. You can lead a horse to water but you cannot force them to drink. We should teach children about their health but ultimately, you have to leave the decision of what they eat up to them. Otherwise, they will not learn the consequences of their choices and cannot learn to make the right choices.
