Public execution and torture as punishment

Many criminals are let to walk free. As many say, the punishment should fit the crime. But does it? Should it really?

As a society we're better than that. ........................................................................

I am 100% against it. Execution and torture is way in the Middevil times. Just imagine doing something wrong now. What would even be considered right to wrong? That may be an easy question and all, but just imagine living in fear of doing something wrong by accident.

You wont be tortured and put to death because you knocked something off a shelf at your local supermarket ;)

Torture is sometimes necessary, all countries practice it but few admit to it. What would you do if you caught a terrorist who planted a bomb somewhere and refused to reveal the location?

You would have the choice between torturing a murderer, or letting innocents die. For me the choice is already done

Hello M,

Nahhh. But if Trump gets his way that’s where we’re headed.

Ex, I think that's a little much. I'm confident that Trump doesn't support public execution.

How can you be confident in anything a maniac might do?

I'd have to echo the sentiments given already. As a society we ARE better then that. And those that still practice those archaic means need to be better.

The point is the people who have committed said atrocious crimes are not, in fact better than that. Should someone commit a crime like that, say rape for example, the punishment would serve as no deterrent. It would a punishment based upon the individual as a form of revenge, to gratify society of the crime they have committed. And frankly, we as a society are barely better than anything, as our nature clearly shows

True, they are not, however their actions don't speak for society as evidence that society often punishes the unwanted action.

We often have to fight our nature, which is why there are laws. There is a difference between punishment and revenge and that is what we often blur the lines on but we are still better than we were before.

What do you mean by better than that? For a crime there must be a just punishment, giving a death sentence to a serial killer or a pedophile seems justified to me

There is a difference between public execution and torture vs. the death penalty where there are only a few people who are directly involved (victim or families of the victim) witnessing the execution. My thoughts on the death penalty aside, this was about making public execution and torture a punishment.

That happened to Jesus. Jesus is the perfect example of an innocent Man tortured and executed, and in public.

I'm for execution and torture (only in the cases where it is justified) but certainly not publicly, it wont help at all. You'll just give ideas to mentally ill who will see it as the opportunity to have 10 minutes of fame

I'm not sure refusing the execution be carried out on a plazza in the middle of town is hiding it. It can be done inside a prison and everyone who wants to can come and watch, there should also be an announce on tv that X is being executed for X crime

The motivation behind public execution is a callback to previous times where people saw the brutal, justified (sometimes) execution of their enemies themselves. The punishment is more “real”. There would be a trial still. If someone did it for attention that can be determined

Side: Against it

The more intense the punishment, the less often it must be used. Letting someone off lighter than their transgression is actually cruel to innocent people bc it does not deter the crime!

As far as public? I think that may be a little over the top - I mean little kids may be watching. U know?
