I am 100% against it. Execution and torture is way in the Middevil times. Just imagine doing something wrong now. What would even be considered right to wrong? That may be an easy question and all, but just imagine living in fear of doing something wrong by accident. Side: Against it
You wont be tortured and put to death because you knocked something off a shelf at your local supermarket ;) Torture is sometimes necessary, all countries practice it but few admit to it. What would you do if you caught a terrorist who planted a bomb somewhere and refused to reveal the location? You would have the choice between torturing a murderer, or letting innocents die. For me the choice is already done Side: For it

The point is the people who have committed said atrocious crimes are not, in fact better than that. Should someone commit a crime like that, say rape for example, the punishment would serve as no deterrent. It would a punishment based upon the individual as a form of revenge, to gratify society of the crime they have committed. And frankly, we as a society are barely better than anything, as our nature clearly shows Side: For it
The point is the people who have committed said atrocious crimes are not, in fact better than that. True, they are not, however their actions don't speak for society as evidence that society often punishes the unwanted action. And frankly, we as a society are barely better than anything, as our nature clearly shows We often have to fight our nature, which is why there are laws. There is a difference between punishment and revenge and that is what we often blur the lines on but we are still better than we were before. Side: Against it
There is a difference between public execution and torture vs. the death penalty where there are only a few people who are directly involved (victim or families of the victim) witnessing the execution. My thoughts on the death penalty aside, this was about making public execution and torture a punishment. Side: Against it

The motivation behind public execution is a callback to previous times where people saw the brutal, justified (sometimes) execution of their enemies themselves. The punishment is more “real”. There would be a trial still. If someone did it for attention that can be determined Side: Against it

The more intense the punishment, the less often it must be used. Letting someone off lighter than their transgression is actually cruel to innocent people bc it does not deter the crime! As far as public? I think that may be a little over the top - I mean little kids may be watching. U know? Side: For it
