Qualitative Research Must Be Encouraged Among Undergraduates.

Dr. Prasanna Dean and Head of the Ethical committee of your college observed that the undergraduate students submit only the Quantitative Research proposals for the ICMR projects. She was of the opinion that the undergraduates must be introduced and encouraged to take up Qualitative Research projects. She wanted to know the opinion of the faculties regarding this. Let’s help Dr. Prasanna by conducting a debate among faculties on “Qualitative Research must be encouraged among undergraduates” and see how many are for and against the motion.

Qualitative research should be encouraged in undergraduate Medical courses because,

1. Presently there is hardly any research for qualitative measures while you can access plenty for quantitative measures.

2. Qualitative research will answer many research questions that cannot be simply derived using numbers.

3. Easier to conduct.

4. Allows to explore and generate hypothesis.

5. High face validity.

6. Low cost

7. Faster results

Respected DOME faculty and Co-learners,

I am submitting my response toThread2.2Qualitative Research DEBATE Qualitative Research Must Be Encouraged Among Undergraduates 29th Sept-1st Oct.

Dr. Ayesha Begum from Batch 2020BPropose

I propose the notion that “Qualitative Research must be encouraged among undergraduates for the following reasons.

1. It becomes possible to understand attitudes.

CBME has given immense importance to AETCOM. The processes which are provided by qualitative research provide for a potential understanding for attitudes of individuals. Because qualitative research helps us all understand attitudes better, it becomes easier to maintain doctor patient relationships. Doing a Qualitative research can be implemented as one of the methodologies to teach AETCOM. By giving the apt research topic we can even find solutions to the social problems like Attitudes of people regarding Covid vaccine etc.

2. It is a content generator.

The qualitative research approach allows for genuine ideas to be collected from specific socioeconomic demographics. These ideas are then turned into data that can be used to create valuable content which reflects the brand messaging being offered. When this process is performed properly, everyone benefits from a refined and beneficial value proposition.

3. It allows creativity to be a driving force.

Research often wants facts instead of opinions. It wants observations instead of creativity. The qualitative research process goes in a different direction than traditional research. This format eliminates the bias that tends to come through collected data as respondents attempt to answer questions in a way that please the researcher. Respondents are encouraged to be themselves. In return, the data that can be collected from the respondents tends to have more accuracy to it.

4. It is a process that is always open-ended.

It accesses the emotional data that drives decision-making responses. Because it is an open-ended process, there is no “right” or “wrong” answer, which makes data collection much easier. This also helps undergraduates to master the art of not being judgmental.

5. It saves money.

The qualitative research process uses a smaller sample size than other research methods. This is due to the fact that more information is collected from each participant. Smaller sample sizes equate to lower research costs. Not only does this research process save money, but it can also produce faster results. Thus it can be a cost effective method for learning humanities.

6. It has flexibility.

There isn’t a rigid structure to the qualitative research process. It seeks authentic data and emotional responses instead. Because of this flexibility, researchers are permitted to follow-up on any answer they wish to generate more depth and complexity to the data being collected. In the qualitative research can follow any thought tangent and mine data from the answers provided. This also improves their critical thinking skills.

Hence, I strongly propose Qualitative Research must be encouraged among undergraduates

Dr. Ayesha Begum,

Berg and Howard (2012) characterise qualitative research as meanings, a concept, a definition, metaphors, symbols and a description of things. This definition clearly show that qualitative research contains all necessary instruments that can evoke recall which aids problem-solving. Qualitative data instruments such as observation, open-ended questions, in-depth interview (audio or video), and field notes are used to collect data from participants in their natural settings. The methods employed in data collection give full description of the research with respect to the participants involved. The participants’ observation and focused group nature of qualitative research approach create wider understanding of behaviour. Hence, qualitative research approach provides abundant data about real life people and situations .

Secondly, the system through which data are retrieved in qualitative research approach is regarded as being unique. The reliance on the collection of non-numerical primary data such as words and pictures by the researcher who serves as an instrument himself makes qualitative research well-suited for providing factual and descriptive information

Thirdly, in this research approach, theory emerges from data. Different authors use different words or phrases such as: ‘investigative, do-it-yourself and bottom-up’ to explain the originality and independent nature of the qualitative research approach The emergent of theory from data allows the researcher to construct and reconstruct theories where necessary, based on the data he generates, instead of testing data generated elsewhere by other researchers. Expressions and experiences of the participants are easily understood even when there are little or no information about them .

Moreover, a qualitative research approach views human thought and behaviour in a social context and covers a wide range of phenomena in order to understand and appreciate them thoroughly. Human behaviours, which include interaction, thought, reasoning, composition, and norms, are studied holistically due to in-depth examination of phenomena. The close relationship that exists between the researcher and the participants in this approach makes it easy for the participant to contribute to shaping the research. This however account for significant understanding of experiences as its participants understand themselves and also understand experience as unified.

Qualitative research focuses more on thoughts, concepts, or experiences. The data collected often comes in narrative form and concentrates on unearthing insights that can lead to testable hypotheses. An undergraduate qualitative researcher has to learn to see, hear, perceive and understand in new ways. This makes a student learn to move out of the center of their own attention and clearly observe social settings and the individuals within them. They learn to see meanings from the perspectives of others, and not impose their own preconceived notions on experience. They develop a finely tuned ethical sense and negotiate ethical dilemmas encountered in the research process. Finally, they will be able to analyze and perceive patterns in the data they collect so that they are able to conduct thematic analysis. None of this is easy and learning to do so is a developmental process involving both the theory and philosophies of qualitative research and skill development which is very much needed for our undergraduates.

I'm here by submitting my response to Thread 2.2 Qualitative Research DEBATE Qualitative Research Must Be Encouraged Among Undergraduates 29th Sept-1st Oct. of Qualitative Research Intersession for Group Marx -PROPOSE

1. Subject materials can be evaluated with greater detail

Qualitative research focuses less on the metrics of the data that is being collected and more on the subtleties of what can be found in that information.

2. Research frameworks can be fluid and based on incoming or available data.

It can adapt to the quality of information that is being gathered. If the available data does not seem to be providing any results, the research can immediately shift gears and seek to gather data in a new direction. This offers more opportunities to gather important clues about any subject instead of being confined to a limited and often self-fulfilling perspective.

3. Qualitative research data is based on human experiences and observations.

Many forms of research rely on the second operating system while ignoring the instinctual nature of the human mind. Qualitative research doesn’t ignore the gut instinct. It embraces it and the data that can be collected is often better for it.

4. Qualitative research is an open-ended process.

When a researcher is properly prepared, the open-ended structures of qualitative research make it possible to get underneath superficial responses and rational thoughts to gather information from an individual’s emotional response. This is critically important to this form of researcher because it is an emotional response which often drives a person’s decisions or influences their behavior.

5. Creativity becomes a desirable quality within qualitative research.

By embracing the qualitative research method, it becomes possible to encourage respondent creativity, allowing people to express themselves with authenticity. In return, the data collected becomes more accurate and can lead to predictable outcomes.

6. Smaller sample sizes are used in qualitative research, which can save on costs.

Many qualitative research projects can be completed quickly and on a limited budget

7. Attitude explanations become possible with qualitative research.

Qualitative Research can capture changing attitudes within a target group such as consumers of a product or service, or attitudes in the workplace.

8. Data complexities can be incorporated into generated conclusions.

Complexities, when gathered into a singular database, can generate conclusions with more depth and accuracy, which benefits everyone.

All the undergraduates should participate in research. It has got many benefits, unfortunately, they are very few opportunities to get involved in research during under graduation. This may be either due to a lack of knowledge, time, or foresight. Students should be made aware of the research. The infrastructure should be improved in the colleges and funding for research should be boosted.

They are many benefits of getting involved in research during under graduation,

1. It will instill a culture of Evidence-based medicine while practicing.

2. Survey done by academic physicians has shown that students who undertook research have got four times more publications than their peers.

3. Another survey showed among students who were involved with research, 75% were motivated to pursue research as a career while 60% have chosen an academic career.

4. It may foster a deeper understanding of the concepts.

5. Good mentorship is the key to effective research.

6. Students should play a major role in research like they should be involved in critical thinking during the process.

Qualitative Research Must Be Encouraged Among Undergraduates

29th September to 1st October, 2021

Qualitative research muse b encouraged among undergraduates – PROPOSE

Educational research for long has been limited to only thesis for post graduates in broad specialities and super specialities. In the recent past with new guidelines laid down by NMC, faculty as well as undergraduate are also expected to be involved in research. Various opportunities are being provided to undergraduate students through ICMR to encourage research. What is being observed is that to a large extent research done is mostly quantitative in nature i.e. the “HOW MUCH” is being analysed. But the “WHY HOW,WHAT” is not being analysed at the same rate. There is a need to know these too. Undergraduates must be made aware about qualitative research and encouraged to implement it too.

• It helps them to have a better and deeper understanding of various phenomena, experiences

• This in turn helps them enhance their knowledge and understanding of these phenomena

• They can understand the complexity of human experience in the natural setting. For example why is a particular drug/intervention being accepted or not accepted? A preventive method which is ideal to embrace, maybe seen as a threat or socially unacceptable by some. When an undergraduate goes into the depth of this, it gives him/her a better understanding of that phenomenon.

• Qualitative research will help students understand that different people have different views - All views which may be valid. It broadens the student’s perspectives.

• Students when aware of the various perspectives will be more empathetic towards them.

• If the students are aware of “why” a particular phenomenon is happening, they are likely to come up with strategies to resolve it.

• With AETCOM being introduced, these students can use qualitative research to enhance their communication skills, attitude towards patients (via the data collection methods and tools).

• If qualitative research is encouraged at an early stage ie undergraduate, they are more likely to pursue similar pattern of research even at a later stage too.

Thank you.

Qualitative research process is time-consuming.

Interpretations are limited during qualitative research.

Personal experience and knowledge influence observations and conclusions, this process delves into personal interaction for data collection, discussions often tend to deviate from the main issue to be studied.

Qualitative research might take several weeks or months.

Qualitative research is open-ended, so students have more control over the content of the data collected.

Qualitative research requires a labor-intensive analysis process such as categorization, recoding, etc.

Qualitative research requires well-experienced marketers to obtain the needed data from a group of respondents.

Qualitative research requires thoughtful planning to ensure the obtained results are accurate as there is no way to analyze qualitative data quantitatively.

Qualitative research is based more on opinion and judgment rather than results.

Qualitative studies are unique they are difficult to replicate.

Qualitative research is a perspective-based method of research, the responses given are not measured.

The UG medical researcher who wants to apply qualitative methods must learn to handle the impact of the researcher's role, presumptions and consequences of sampling, and systematic organization and interpretation of the material. These are, however, challenges that must be overcome in all scientific pursuits, irrespective of the type of data used. Qualitative Research by undergraduates has the following disadvantages

1. It is not a statistically representative form of data collection.

It will only provide research data from perspectives only. Responses with this form of research cannot usually be measured. Only comparisons are possible, and that tends to create data duplication over time

2. It relies upon the experience of the researcher.

The data collected through qualitative research is dependent upon the experience of the researchers involved in the process. As undergraduates are inexperienced, validity and reliability of the research may be affected.

Researchers must also have good interviewing skills, have the courage to ask follow-up questions, and be able to form professional bonds with participants to ensure the accuracy of the data.

3. There can be loss of Data

Data must be recognized by the researchers in qualitative research for it to be collected. Researchers that are unable to see necessary data when they observe, will lose it, which lessens the accuracy of the results and could even lead towards false conclusions. As undergraduates are new to research and especially Qualitative Research if not trained can form false conclusions.

4. It may require multiple sessions.

Which is time consuming and with the curriculum and continuous assessments, students may be overburdened.

5. It can be influenced by researcher bias.

Hence I oppose Qualitative research.

I oppose the idea of encouraging undergraduates to conduct qualitative study for following reasons:

1. Qualitative research methodology requires expertise in things like conducting interviews in a specific manner. That in fact requires training. SInce it is an open ended enterprise the student in an effort to make the participant more forthcoming may lose sight of the objective at hand.

2. Since ICMR research projects during undergraduate days are literally the first researches they ever conduct a quantitative study is far better than a qualitative study to develop a thorough grounding in basic research methodology.

3. Qualitative study by definition is interpreting the collected data from the point of view of the researcher. Interpretation requires a non judgemental mature approach for the findings to be valid at all. This mature approach is something learned from experience over atleast a few years.

4. Students may not thoroughly understand the ethical and especially the confidentiality issues when conducting a qualitative research.

5. Majority of the staff members themselves are inexperienced in conducting a qualitative research and the student research may end up being in a state of blind leading the blind.

6. qualitative research takes a lot of time and effort both from staff and students and it is certainly more difficult which could in the end dampen the enthusiasm of the student and the whole effort can become counterproductive.

Respected DOME faculty and dear co-learners,

Hereby, submitting my response to Thread 2.2Qualitative Research DEBATE Qualitative Research Must Be Encouraged Among Undergraduates _ 29th Sept-1st Oct.

I oppose the statement “Qualitative Research must be encouraged among Undergraduates”

Dr. Kuldeep J Dabade - ACME 2020B batch- Oppose.

I oppose for the following reasons

1. It creates subjective data.

Although there are several benefits to consider when using the personal perspective of researchers in the qualitative research method, there will always be a subjective quality to the data that they gather.

2. It takes a lot of time to collect the data points.

When there is a lot of information available from this research process, there must be a time commitment to sort through the elements to determine what is usable and what is not.

3. It does not offer statistical representation.

Qualitative research does not care about percentages or statistics. It wants to find commonalities. Although this process is helpful for looking at specific areas of concern within ultra-local demographics, it can be challenging to apply the findings to a broader population.

4. It requires researchers to be knowledge about what they are reviewing.

The opportunities that are possible through qualitative research become possible because of the industry-related expertise that researchers have. If an interviewer is unfamiliar with the subject involved, then they cannot ask the relevant questions that are necessary to get the results that are desired.

5. It requires researchers to identify unspoken data points.

Researchers are trusted to connect all of the dots when they gather information through the qualitative process. They must read non-verbal cues, have an empathetic response, and understand the situation behind each action a person takes when going through this process.

6. It may require repetitive research efforts.

Because qualitative research focuses on a smaller sample size to develop a rich data profile, the complexity of the questions involved becomes a potential disadvantage. When there is a critical decision to be made, then discovering the potential consequences on both sides of that equation can help to develop a better SWOT profile.

7. It is challenging to replicate results using this method.

Theories become fact because third-party researchers can verify the information that the initial studies produce. When others can duplicate your work, it becomes useful to the betterment of that demographic. Qualitative research is highly subjective, so finding opportunities for duplication are incredibly rare. If you need someone else to verify your results, then the scope of information collection will be limited.

8. It can be subjective to research influence.

The data points collected during the qualitative research process can be influenced subtly to produce specific results that look authentic. It is possible to support a biased point of view by asking targeted questions that generate a specific result.

9. It does not offer data rigidity.

The qualitative research process tries to find points of common ground that people share in specific demographics. It is like having one person say, “I like the color green,” and then having other people agree with that statement. When researchers want to pinpoint specific opportunities for advancement or improvement, the generic nature of common ground makes it impossible to create meaningful results.

• It’s a labor-intensive approach: Requires well-experienced persons to obtain the needed data from a group of respondents

• Qualitative research is not statistically representative

• The quality of the data gathered in qualitative research is highly subjective

• Qualitative research creates findings that are valuable, but difficult to present

I oppose the statement that "Qualitative research must be encouraged among undergraduates"

1. Undergraduates do not have sufficient time for conducting qualitative research.

2. Undergraduates lack the experience required for collecting and analysing the data for qualitative research.

3. They may not have good communication skills required for collecting data for qualitative research.

4. Even the faculty guides may not be experienced in guiding them for qualitative research.

Respected DOME faculty and ACME Co-learners,

My response to Thread2.2Qualitative ResearchDEBATEQualitative Research Must Be Encouraged Among Undergraduates 29th Sept-1st Oct

I oppose the statement “Qualitative Research must be encouraged among Undergraduates” for the following reasons

1. It needs subject expertise & experience for the researcher as data collected through qualitative research is dependent upon the experience of the researchers involved in the process. Students with not much of experience may misinterpret data.

2. May lead to researcher bias which may affect the data and conclusions of the study.

3. Time consuming process, takes more time to gather it. Students may lose their precious time in this process, thereby making them lose their focus on studies.

Qualitative research is in a way a bit more complex than Quantitative research at an undergraduate level. The complexity lies mainly in the result interpretation and handling the flexibility aspect. An undergraduate as a principal PI may not be able to carryout the research on his/her own.

An undergraduate is already facing lot of challenges while adopting to CBME curriculum. Most of the students are still not getting the hold of the design of syllabus. even in their schooling they are not used to case scenarios in any subjects. And all of a sudden if they have to face such scenarios routinely, they definitely feel lost and that exactly is happening.

Most of the undergraduates get involved in research just for the sake of licensure exams if they are planning to go abroad. A handful of students are truly interested. Thus they may not carry out the research in true sense. There are chances of manipulation of data.

Thus in my opinion , Qualitative research need be started by an undergraduate when he still is a novice. They may be encouraged to take up only in their final year or internship when they would be mature enough to understand the true essence of Qualitative research.
