What's a "good" debate? What's good to me may not seem good to you... People have been bitching about the quality of debates here for years although I don't understand why? I see plenty of decent debates. And if someone doesn't agree then they're welcome to post a quality debate of their choosing.

Which constitutes a disagreement which can be debated.

People have been bitching about the quality of debates here for years although I don't understand why? I see plenty of decent debates. And if someone doesn't agree then they're welcome to post a quality debate of their choosing.

I agree with you here concerning the debates various users choose to create. But when it comes to making good arguments, creating new debates won't help in that department at all. For example, I thought Dana created some pretty good debates, however, the way she conducted herself was terrible. Andy and I thought it would be cool to create kind of a primer on what the qualities of effective argumentation are. Do you think we'd be wasting our time to try?

Soooo... you and Andy are going to teach everyone how to argue? Not only does it seem a little arrogant, but it is a waste of time. How about letting people be themselves? There's good debaters here and bad, very young and older debaters, some people are more serious about it than others... we have people from all over the world... English isn't everyone's first language... the community is very diverse and IMHO, I like it that way. You're never going to get everyone to behave in the manner that you think is right.

Debate with the people you deem worthy, and ignore the rest.

I think you are misunderstanding, and then mischaracterizing what we're trying to do. if we weren't soliciting input from the whole community, your suspicion that we're arrogant might have some merit. Besides that I am wondering where in the world you get the idea that crowdsourcing information about what constitutes an effective approach to debate is a way of not letting people be themselves. To top it off, you declare this effort to be a waste of time and don't bother to explain in the slightest, why you believe this.

There's good debaters here and bad, very young and older debaters, some people are more serious about it than others... we have people from all over the world... English isn't everyone's first language... the community is very diverse and IMHO, I like it that way. You're never going to get everyone to behave in the manner that you think is right.

You act like we're taking an authoritarian approach and seem blind to the fact that if we don't set standards as a group, an authoritarian approach is our only alternative. If you've ever spoken up about behavior you find objectionable on this site, you are looking like a hipocrite right now.

You asked me if I thought it was a waste of time... I told you what I thought.. it is. Sorry you didn't get the opinion you were hoping for... Maybe you're looking for ideas from the community on how to debate and maybe you're not... regardless it sounds like you're trying to set some standard... or structure on how to debate. That will never happen.

Then you call me a hypocrite? Really? I've almost NEVER spoken out about behavior on this site other than Dana and I didn't speak out against this... I haven't complained about your attempt to get everyone to debate the way you want them to. You asked my opinion and you got it. I'm sorry if you don't like it.

I know Andy is interested in creating a debate series specifically oriented around explanattions of what makes for effective argumentation/Debate. I (unlike you apparently) think it's a smart thing for him to do as owner of what should become a quite famous internet tool if managed right. I intend to help him acheive his goals with the site, since MY opinion is that they are worthwhile goals. it won't be people who aren't deeply passionate about how sincere thoughtful debate, and historically unprecedented tools like the createdebate website can affect the world, who make this site the success it should be

I didn't call you a hipocrite. I crafted an "if the shoe fits" statement you are the one who put it on and pranced around for us :)

People are not looking for accuracy, they are looking for entertainment ;)

That's why the news is all hype and very little content. It sounds more dramatic and urgent to state that you are holding you breath until someone joins. People want to find out how long before you pass out ;)

This site was completely overrun with trolls before you got here. They seem to have settled down some, but the quality of the debates on this site is still severely lacking and there just aren't enough people on the site to provide a wide variety of views, in my opinion.
