Rape Simulation Video Game

I came across an article, which I won't post due to its biased views (feel free to research on your own), about a Japanese game that has many in the world appalled and left without words and perhaps understandably so. The game is Rapelay, a rape simulator giving its players a free-roaming world where they can act out these what-would-be crimes in a digital arena. Objections to this game seem fairly obvious. "It’s justifying, minimizing and making a joke out of a horrible crime."  However advocates of the game have a compelling argument as well. "This game gives people with these urges a legal and harmless outlet for their behavior." These arguments go much deeper than this but that seems to be the basic stance on both sides of the fence.

My question of debate is: What do you think? Should this game be legal or illegal and why?

Well, RapeLay is not a free roam game. It's just you raping a mother and her two daughters (16 and 10). Not relevant to the argument, just thought everyone should know.

Anyway, a game like this should be legal (at least, in areas where a right to free speech is provided) because it IS free speech. Video games are protected by the first amendment, so it's actually illegal to make a video game illegal.

And second, video games are usually known for violence. you know, you killing a shit load of other people whether they be innocent or not. Hitman - Assassinate targets.

GTA - Kill ANYONE you want.

The fact is, murder is worse of a crime than rape yet we seem to be okay with murder in video games but not rape. GTA is rated M, but RapeLay, if released in America (which it's not illegal here, by the way) would be rated Ao. Hmm, a game with a worse crime is not rated as harshly as the other game.

What about the rest of the world??

Any reasoning apart from the constitution?

If the rest of the world doesn't believe in free speech, that is THEIR problem.

I believe in free speech though, so I think they SHOULD make it legal.

Side: legal

Yes, a game like this should be legal because it comes down to Constitutional free speech. It maybe degrading to women, but it is definitely a legal game.

When it comes to games, people uproar because of the violent nature of the game but when it comes to movies, nobody complains about the violent nature of the movie like Saw.

We already have games where the object is to kill as many people as possible. Why would a rape or sex game be out of the question??

Wee already have Grand Theft Auto, how much worse is this game?

To clarify, this is similar to my position on the war on drugs, video games already depict just about every other so-called "immoral" actions. mass, spree, and serial killing, homosexual intercourse, polygamy, theft of all types, use of drugs and even cannibalism and torture. And yet no link has been confirmed, in fact studies have show conflicting evidence, as to these acts in video games and the real world.

Who cares if this type of game exists. You either live in a free society or not, do yourself a favor and grasp that concept. Granted there need to be checks and balances but if someone wants to play a game that YOU find morally appalling, it is YOU that is trying to impede THEIR freedom to do so. We have laws regarding rape, if you'd like some on thought crime I suggest you try moving to North Korea.

Wow.

That is some fucked up shit. I don't think there should even be a defence for these kinds of things. Unless you've grown up in a protected bubble and haven't seen the realities of a lot of the things you protect/encourage i.e. liberals.

You are attempting to discredit us by avoiding any actual, sound argument. This is purely ad hominem, the only reason this argument has any support is clearly bias.

I think that this game should be illegal. It is all about rape. Imagine a 10 year old playing this! It might encourage a real rape, which means you could go to a REAL prison. Look what GTA did. This will be even worse!

There is no proof that GTA had anything to do with it, as far as we can prove, a certain amount of criminals happen to play it. As another fact, I know from experience that Saint's Row is much worse for these types of things, but I haven't heard of any controversy about it.

I've taken some time and read the arguments on both sides of this argument, for I was unsure what to think, or maybe just initially shocked. And here is what I've hitherto determined:

The elements of this debate are "the severity of rape games compared to legal games with murder" and "whether the game promotes or nullifies the urge to rape"

1) The act of murder and the act of rape are the result of two different mental states. Murder needs a motive, and generally is done for a potential monetary gain, aided with ouside development of disposition towards humanity, otherwise it is caused by compulsions of insanity. Both of which do not root from natural impulses the healthy mind in an isolated state (meaning without outside influence, not without accompaniment, for social isolation is a major contributor to insanity). The urge to kill must be developed.

Rape pulls much closer to primal instincts than murder. Sexual uges develop in everyone and are apart of everyday life past puberty. The development of fetishes such as rape come from a combination of natural sexual impulses, natural dominance impulses and the inability to differentiate the two, or the assisted correlation thereof. Aided by a catalyst for action, possibly conflict, rape may occur. Thereby rape is a much more influencial act than murder. This does not mean I think it is better or worse than murder. To me, after looking unbiastly, i have determined what is wrong is wrong.

2) Being that rape is driven from a sexual impulse and murder is an act of concious defiance, mostly, I have determined that the promotion of the act through mediated outputs may potentially increase the rapist's urge to rape.

For instance, if you enjoy some activity, such as sports or music, playing a videogame of these activities increases your will to actually take part in that activity. Note: Murder is not a natural impulse, so the urge to kill does not develop this way.

Murder goes back to our primal instincts as well. Part of the whole "fight or flight" thing, except that we can find any excuse to murder, and we do sometimes get urges for it. We just never act on it because the idea of killing someone just for cutting us off on the freeway sounds horrible.

Same thing for rape. We get sexual urges, and we really want to fuck those who we find sexually attractive, but we don't rape them because it sounds horrible to us. We don't resort to rape because, like murder, it doesn't make us feel good.

Those who murder do it because they either want to or need to. Those who resort to rape usually do it for a power thing. It really does have to do with a form of sociopathy, not just some urge.

Fight or flight is a defense mechanism in the mind upon the occurence of a threat, and is thereby not the instigation of murder. Muderers are the threat which would cause the victim to default. Besides, we are at a point in our humanity that the apparent urge to kill would be revoked by our reason and intelligence. The occurence of such would indicate a lack of one or both.

-

The most primal emotions are fear and lust. Both are to better our odds to survive. Murder is not subsequent to fear, where rape is subsequent to lust, thusly is rape more primal.

This is no different to snuff movies. It is wrong!!! There is no need to gratify the desires of anyone in this way. This reminds me of a recent case where some arsehole sex offender will be recieving sex-drive medication , courtasy of the tax payer . If you wish to get off on rape "play" , find a WILLING partner (there are even people who will professionally cater to fetishes) And there are therapists ! , But to create and release this activity in the form of a game is just a rather repulsive excuse to promote a violent crime , ( i do not like grand theft auto either) , and make money out of people....Why anyone would chose this , as an effective method to reabilitating rapists or peodophiles is beyond me . Why also then , would this be available to anyone to purchase ? , if it was as they claim to reabilitate or prevent otherwise peodophiles or rapists . To closet oneself away to take delight in such a fashion as this could have quite the opposite effect to what they promote it will achieve and i find it frightening to know that so many people are in favor of this as it really places an increased risk to the safety of society as a whole. If i find a single store has sold this shit to one of my kids (like they did GTA), i will be copping an assault charge and it will be well worth it !!
