Hi, the first time I saw a debate like this I thought it was a joke, but apparently there are people who really believe this, how wide spread is this movement? And do they really believe it or do they just want to fool around?

Side: Real

Oh, it's definitely a joke, some people just aren't in on it ;)

It is still largely on the fringes, but I have met people who believe and felt comfortable saying they believe it.

Some in the "flat earth society' just like creating epistemological challenges (how people come to know what they know), but the true believers are real and growing for the moment. I imagine that, at some point, something or someone popular will do some demonstration and the trend will lose its luster.

In part I think it relates to a growing sense of religious frustration - they see people leaving the church, or chosing to be cafeteria Christians, etc. and the response has been the inerrant word of God, 6 day creation, no evolution, flat earth, no gay marriage, etc., etc. Yet, while the number of strict Christians has gone up in recent years, ironically, the overall response has been more people leaving the church overall, especially moderates.

Real science?

Settle the question for yourself once and for all by building a giant rocket and launching yourself into space.

Otherwise, what? Are you simply believing the things you read?

Real science?

Yes.

Here is something that may appeal to the believers out there.

Are you simply believing the things you read?

You can prove it for yourself. Travel. See the sun set on the ocean. Watch an eclipse. Do science experiments like the one in the article above (it's easier now that it's more than 2000 years later...).

I'm calling people to actually perform experimentation instead of simply believing what they read or hear. What the problem?

Understand and truly know what you believe instead of going by what other people say is knowledge and trying to pass it off as your own.

Just because you perform an experiment that someone else came up with doesn't mean that you even understand how that experiment proves something. Just because you get the same results in an experiment doesn't mean that you interpret the results in the same way.

So how do you really isolate the variables? How do you really come to know something?

Don't claim to care about science when all you do is parrot of the things you've heard the lab coat wearing priests say. Follow the scientific method on your own, that is what a real scientist does. People who claim to love science while simply believing what they read fail to see how they are the very thing that science is a reaction against.

Data science, also known as data-driven science, is an interdisciplinary field of scientific methods, processes, algorithms and systems to extract knowledge or insights from data in various forms, either structured or unstructured, similar to data mining.
