Respect; a right or privilege?

Respect is a common term for a practice that we use in order to maintain peace and order with the community. You are responsible to give it towards everyone if you consider yourself a part of the group

Disrespect on the other hand is something that the other person earned for himself

I'd say that 'respect' as you are using it is more a three position switch. Where I'd use 'common courtesy' where you use 'respect'; as everyone gets 'common courtesy' until/unless they earn respect or disrespect from me.

I see no difference. You simply gave it different names but it still carries the same definitions.

Perhaps you are mistaking Respect for Admiration?

Nicely put. ;)

For me, respect must be earned by EVERYONE: you do not automatically have my respect, it is a gradual process of your actions. What especially annoys me is the bullshit people say "respect me, and I'll respect you." That is jackshit.

It appears like you are mistaking the word "Respect" for "Admiration"?

Respect is about looking at someone the same way as you would to yourself and others. Admiration is where you look up to them

Maybe your looking for another word other than respect. Going by definition respect and admire are synonyms.

I agree. .

Side: Right

I'm not sure if I think respect is a privilege, but it is definitely not a right, so I'm going with this one.

It is not illegal to be disrespectful, thus is respect not a right.

Side: Privilege

Since respect is a feeling then those feelings must be earned first.

But just because I don't respect you does not mean I'll disrespect you.

It does not have to be one or the other.

Respect is earned and is a two way street. .
