Strictly "tanning" does not lead to cancer. The way the person treats their body to get that tan, does. For instance, going to a tanning booth weekly, for several months, every year, will certainly damage your melanoma cells and destroy them with time, as your body will be unable to repeair those cells because your body maybe stopped giving a crap because the person stopped caring too. Tanning under the sun, is healthier in the sense that you use the right protection, eat the right foods, and are under it for only so long in a day. It's common knowledge that 30 minutes in the sun a day is healthy. Our body needs and wants that Vitamin D it offers. You can safely tan in those 30 minutes while still using a skin protector. I think the biggest flaw with tanning these days is people want to be darker and darker and they abuse the power to tan. Plus, I think it's a lack of self-esteem to want to tan. It's just a stupid trend. But overall, I think the sun is a safer way to go, given that you still use some form of sunscreen and eat well. Knowledge is power. :-) Side: Under the sun.
