Say goodbye to the trolls of CreateDebate

I created a script that will filter out the trolls and other annoying users on this site. It can be configured to do the following things.

• Hide all debates created by the people in your troll list.
• Hide all comments created by the people in your troll list.
• Color all debates/comments by the trolls
• Put a troll icon or other image next to their debates/comments so they are easy to identify

All the features are optional, so you can pick and choose the ones you like. If you just want to use the defaults you can skip step 3.  By default it will hide debates of the following trolls and grey out their comments:  brontoraptor, outlaw60, fromwithin, nowasaint, dadman", GrittyWorm, dbcooper, atheistchimp, stiflersmom, subcreature, negligentt, cucumbercat, excon, saintnow, ratour.

STEP 1: Install a browser plugin that can run scripts.
    Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/greasemonkey/
    Google Chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/tampermonkey/dhdgffkkebhmkfjojejmpbldmpobfkfo?hl=en
Internet Explorer/Edge: Install a better browser

STEP 2: Install the script
     https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/28693-create-debate-troll-filter

STEP 3: Configure the script if you don't like the default settings
The default settings will hide troll debates, grey their comments out in other people's debates, and put a troll icon next to their comments.

Firefox: Click the drop-down arrow next to the Monkey icon on the top right of your browser.
        1. Select [Manage User Scripts]
        2. Click the [Options] button for the [Create Debate Troll Filter] script
        3. Click the [Edit This User Script] button
        4. Change the variables in the SETTINGS section of the script
        5. Click the [Save] button
        6. If you have a CreateDebate.com page open, refresh it to see the changes.
        7. When you're happy with the results, close the script window by clicking the [X] on the top right corner.

Chrome: Click the TaperMonkey icon on the top right of the browser.
        1. Click the [Dashboard] button

Honestly, it's too much work and I'm lazy, so I'm not going to do it.

It took the same amount of work to write that comment as it does to install it, unless you want to customize the settings, which is a little more work, but still very easy. It's only 4 clicks to use the default settings. It's up to you though. I just wanted people to have the option since this site is overrun with trolls.

ignore....duplicate post......

Not really - you can be sure about them from their words.

Stain/NowASaint - It's basically just a "YOU'LL GO TO HELL! HA!"

Maggot/FromWithin - Always screaming about how abortions and Democrats are bad and Trump is good. Also, his words smell of idiocy and hypocrisy.

NathanAllen (haven't yet referred by any nick) - Too excited about being a fool and a coward.

Yuri - A worse liar and bigger idiot than even maggot, yet more proud of being so.

Honestly, I don't know why people would bother to log onto a debate website just so they could pretend its most active and vocal posters aren't there.

Like I'm always saying, everyone should get to say whatever they want on a debate website, and then it's up to you whether or not you say something back.

The filter is in your own head and mouth. You don't have to program it on your computer.

"Honestly, I don't know why people would bother to log onto a debate website just so they could pretend its most active and vocal posters aren't there."

It's a debate website. The most active posters aren't here to debate. They are here to troll, preach, or spam their blog. I come here for debate, so I only want to see posts by people who are also here for real debate.

I find it quite easy to debate the trolls. Their BS positions always get blown away. Their efforts to rattle me don't. The only power they have over you and this site is the power granted to them by not opposing them and by letting them think they got under your skin.

Great an idea as this is, it, unfortunately, doesn't solve the real problem: a disturbingly vocal group refuse to acknowledge that this is a debate website, not a platform for preaching/spamming biased, clickbait news headlines/trolling.

How does it not solve the problem? It makes those people disappear.

You must have put a lot of effort into creating it, thank you. I actually sometimes enjoy the arguments though, it's interesting to see exactly when their argument begins to break down and they fall back on their broken record routine. But it was nice of you to try to make it easier for people who don't want to listen to their rhetoric.

"You must have put a lot of effort into creating it, thank you."

You're welcome. It actually didn't take much effort. Is a very small script.

"I actually sometimes enjoy the arguments though"

That's why I added the option to just color their debates instead of hiding them completely. That way you can easily identify and ignore them when you're not in the mood for their nonsense, or engage them when you are.

I think there needs to be a popcorn app. Something that provides popcorn so you can munch while you read some of the comments.

Thats pretty cool of you to take the time to do this. I use chrome on my phone to browse the site. Will your script work for me?

LittleMisfit(1745) Clarified

I haven't tried it on mobile, but it should work the same since CD doesn't have any mobile-specific coding that I'm aware of.

1 point

I dont know if you can do it but what I think would be perfect is the ability to maintain a personal "troll list" so when you create a new debate it will pre-ban all the users on that list. Please tell me you can add this function to your script..

LittleMisfit(1745) Clarified

The banning feature of CD is server-side code. I can only modify client-side things with scripts. So unless Andy wants to let me modify the server code, which I think is highly unlikely, then we're out of luck.

Bumping this for those who want to see reasonable debates on this site again.

I agree with your comments and I will arrange to remove the trolls because they are not helpful at all. tetris unblocked
