Should Animals be Held in Captivity?

This is a very vague question. Do you mean should ALL animals be held in captivity? I don't think anyone thinks that.

Do I think that some animals should be kept in captivity? I suppose it depends on the circumstances. For example, I don't see anything wrong with having a tiger or a panda in a zoo, provided it's treated humanely and there are no damaging effects on the animal or the environment. It allows the general public to get up close to animals they otherwise would never see in their lifetime, learn about them, etc.

Super vague question. As said above. No, not all animals deserve to be held in captivity, but are we going to release all the animals from our zoos, release all of the animals we've rescued, currently being held in captivity so we can feed them and help them prosper and then send them to a family or release them back in the wild? Technically pets are animals being held in captivity, fish being a perfect example.

This is a perfect point. It depends on the goal of the people who regulate the captivity.

Is the aim to restore an endangered species?

Or raise awareness on the topic?

Both are good reasons- but even while this is true, we must think about the welfare of the animals we look after.

When I answer this question, I am thinking of the happiness of the children. Children beg to go to the zoo. As long as the animals are properly treated with respect and their habitats are kept clean, I have no objections to their captivity.

Of course not, what did they do wrong to be imprisoned? Be beautiful creatures? Animals should have the right to a natural and fulfilling life.

To clarify: I appreciate rehabilitation facilities that preserve and release threatened or injured species. I also appreciate facilities that care for animals that are permanently injured only if the facility is large enough and professional enough to strategically care for these animals (e.g. have certain activities that stimulate the animals mind (every day); and having space for the animals to flourish).

I would recommend facilities in locations that would allow proper reciprocation of things they would naturally do, and one that offers environment that's reflective of their would-be home (like having facilities in Antarctica, Greenland, etc., that hold polar bears and other arctic animals).

What did animals do to deserve being put in prison. They are the victims of human activities that destroy their habitat so we have to save them by the only means we know how, detention centres - just like refugees......?
