Should Robert Crossland be punished at all?

HEADLINE : An article below.
A primary School science teacher fed a sick dog (that could not eat or take its medicine "as per Huffington post article") to a snapping turtle during an after class session to 3 kids.

FACTS TO NOTE:
Kids are fine and un-scared, matter of fact they feel the prof did it out of sympathy. 'they felt it was the humane thing to do.

Puppy was still alive when it was fed to the turtle. Was very sick and was going to die.

Prof not his first time feeding smaller animals like (guinea pigs or rats) to snakes and turtles. I apparently a very good and loved teacher in the school (not sure how relevant this is to the topic).

Turtle which was owned by the school was apparently illegal (or without proper paper work thou healthy) and was "Ethanised/killed" (apparently too many things to consider if they where to relocate it).

law suit: If found guilty will go to jail for 6 months, lose teaching license and pay a $5000 USD fine.

sorry for wiki i didnt see anywhere else with proper definition and example. feel free to add any.
