Should Slavery be Legalised?

We could, of course, use prisoners.

I'm not against prisoners being forced into unpaid manual labour - community service orders are effectively this. However "slavery" implies that the prisoner is somebody's property and can be bought and sold - never mind the security risk, nobody should be entitled to abuse any human being as if they were their own personal toy. Human rights must be adhered to, even for prisoners, and even if "freedom from slavery" was cut from the bill the potential for other human rights to be ignored increases massively with the reintroduction of slave ownership.

Why would you even ask this question?? only narrow minded people and people without empathy would allow this sort of thing.

Human beings are not products or livestock. We are all one unified species. Slavery puts some individuals on a lower rung than others. That's not right.

Side: No

Denying someone their rights is pretty much never justified, and I'm sure it causes some conflict in the mind of a libertarian who wants both to allow maximum freedom whilst also allowing corporations to use slave labour without regulation, and yes, extremely low wages are almost indistinguishable from slavery.

Now that was just deliberately instigative -- but, if you insist...

Libertarians oppose the minimum wage not because we get a hard-on at the thought of low-wage jobs, but for the simple reason that some people's product of labour simply isn't worth the minimum wage, therefore corporations have to limit their employee base to turn a profit which creates a guaranteed unemployment rate. Meaning, if all other things are done perfectly, there will still be unemployment to the extent that the minimum wage exceeds the value of products worth less than said wage.

The only people who would be working these jobs are those with the lowest human capital anyway (people just entering the workforce) who don't need to make a sustenance wage.

Now, if you never expand or take advantage of your personal human capital, then you will always be earning a low wage, but that's no different from society today, so this point is moot. Besides, if you refuse to take responsibility for furthering your own life, what right do you have to complain when the world doesn't carry you to where you want to go?

People failing to better their lives when they have the freedom to =/= slavery.

now imagine you were the slave and i hired you. You get very low pay, have to do whatever i say without complaining and i don't care how you feel. How do YOU feel?

One does not hire slaves or pay them, they buy them or capture them, and they work for nothing.

Slaves do get food, something to wear, a place on dirt to sleep. That is something.

Side: No

What type of slavery?

Private slavery only comes at the acquiesce of government edict whereas private slavery is impossible in a free society where rights are absolutely protected under life, liberty and property.

Public slavery is already legalized under the guise of central, state and local government.

....Of course not.

The minimum length for an argument is 50 characters. The purpose of this restriction is to cut down on the amount of dumb jokes, so we can keep the quality of debate and discourse as high as possible.

Making people slaves will never happen again in America due to the Amendment outlawing it.
