Should There Be A Law That You Have To Recycle?

i don't think there should be a law but the amount of recyclable items i see littered on the street makes me think that recycling could be improved

Not in that we have trash police, but State by State we should implement recycling facilities similar to what CA has - better if possible. In Nevada trying to recycle something is about as easy as curing cancer, it's not even an option in most areas.

NOTE: I think it should be a State issue, but something the Fed may come up with a minimum standard for.

Where I live, our garbage was picked up twice a week. Then it was reduced to once a week. Then, to encourage people to recycle, they started picking up garbage only once every 2 weeks and we can only put out 4 bags (we can buy tags for a dollar each and each additional bag over 4 has to have a tag on it). Recycling and compostable items get picked up every week and we can put out as much as we want. I think it's worked out pretty well. I'll admit, that when garbage was picked up twice and even once weekly, I couldn't be bothered to recycle, now I kind of don't have a choice, so no law is needed.

"Shouldn't be forced"?

When an individual's poor choices only affect them, that's their own business. When their poor choices destroy the environment of the entire planet? That's no longer just their business. Others have a right to step up and defend the air, ocean, and working ecosystems that belong to everyone.

I think there should be a law that says you have to Recycle because its better for the world and the living organisms. Also us as human beings. If we just threw out those pop cans when they get smashed and mashed all that toxins from the can goes into our air. Did you know that by drinking from can cause Reno failure, so its unhealthy to drink from them anyways.

Side: yes

No, don't need more government intrusion into our private lives. It costs $150 to recycle a ton while if we didn't recycle it would only cost $60 a ton.

It may help the earth but it shouldn't be a requirement. Shouldn't be forced, only advocated.

We tried getting a recycle bin at our house through the trash company. We had it for 3 months and they only picked it up once. If they were to make a law, then they would need to talk to the trash company.

Because the government has no right to tell you "you must throw recycle" because its an invasion of privacy

also it opens the door for the government to say you must fill in the blank wich can lead to problems

No, the federal government has no authority to tell private citizens what to do with their waste. If the states wish to act nanny-like then that is their businesses, but I'd prefer if neither state or federal government forced people to recycle.

More invasion of privacy.

It should only be advocated.

There are a lot of other things we could do to encourage recycling before we resort to making it a law.

For instance, rebate programs on recycling would be awesome, or even free recycling pickup for all residences, including apartment communities (mine currently doesn't have any).

I do believe it is very important and I hate to see waste (especially as I see people throw their bottles in a trashcan that is RIGHT next to a recycling bin) but it would be too hard to enforce a law like this and we haven't exhausted all of our options to increase recycling rates yet.

Regardless of Lay, if we are responsible enough we can always do it without any mandatory rules. But so be it, so people should be force to do so, specially those who ignore that environmental rules.
