Should Water Supplies be Privitized?

http://www.examiner.com/article/former-nestle-ceo-water-should-be-privatized-it-s-not-a-right

"On April 20 Americans Against the Tea Party shared a video of the former CEO of Nestle, coincidentally also the largest seller of bottled water in the world, where he says that he feels that water is not a right and it should be privatized and sold. In the way that he describes it, he also wants to ration water so that people will get their basic human right which he has allotted as five liters for daily hydration, and 25 liters for minimum hygiene"

The beauty of a public water system is that is can run at a loss, meaning it costs more to maintain than it brings in. This ensures that the water is clean, healthy, and we all have access to it. If water was privatized, not everyone would have access to it, and because it would be run for profit, imagine the safety cuts!

water has already been privatized in many areas.... google [yourstate] American Water Company and you will find these guys have privatized vast systems of water delivery in the US already.

.

this trend must not only be STOPPED, but it must be REVERSED.

.

it probably even needs to be NATIONALIZED so that states don't end up waring over it in the future.

Just because water would be a privatized business doesn't mean it will be dirty. Private companies would try to make it as cheap as possible to produce yes, but they would also make it cheaper to buy. I also find it hard to believe that companies in charge of water would not take into account customer satisfaction. If the water business is competitive then companies will need to keep competing on every level including the cleanliness of the product. it could be extremely helpful to privatize water it would just have to be government regulated and it must also be ensured that there is never a monopoly on water.

by definition it means that the water must make a profit.

.

profit is the ONLY criteria in a for-profit company.

.

quality is a KNOB that can (and WILL) be turned in order to meet that criteria.

.

basic utilities and human rights should not be left to the private sector to profit from... the list is long and not limited to:

.

prisons

water

electricity

sewage

roads

air

internet

healthcare

.

these kinds of "natural monopolies" should all be public sector responsibility and ACCOUNTABLE to the constituents being served.
