Should abortion to reduce multiples be legal (e.g. from triplets to twins or a single)

Should a woman be allowed to reduce a pregnancy from quadruplets, or triplets down to twins, or twins to a single child?

What if she is doing it to improve the chances of those remaining? What if she is doing it just because she doesn't feel ready for that many?

Does it change your opinion if the multiple pregnancy is a result of fertility treatments?

Honestly, I was unaware this was a thing that could be done but I think that's kind of messed up for a woman to abort one fetus and not another. I don't think abortion should ever be used as a means of birth control for a woman who simply doesn't want the child, but it should be used as a last resort procedure. So the only feasible reason for something like this to be done should be if that one fetus has a severe genetic disorder that will not be compatible with life or if one fetus is actively killing the other or the mother. Other than that, I don't really understand a logical reason why a woman would abort one and not the other.

It hasn't always been - think it became possible around the mid-80s.

It definitely is done when there is danger posed to one or all of the multiples and/or the mother (premature birth, cerebral palsy, pre-eclampsia, etc.)

Other than that, I don't really understand a logical reason why a woman would abort one and not the other.

It is used a lot for IVF when someone is trying to have a child, but finds out they are pregnant with triplets, quadrulets, etc. But is also used for people who find out they are pregnant with twins, but only feel ready for one child.

Are there certain instances where you think it should be illegal?

I think IVF can also cleave the zygote on purpose to produce identical twins. Should that be allowed as well? One step closer to designer children.

EDIT: Just thought of something completely unethical to experiment with. If IVF can indeed split zygotes, does that mean the twins don't share the same placenta, assuming that they split the zygote pre-implantation?

I wonder if they would develop the same way if they did not share the same placenta?

I am not familiar with IVF and too lazy to read more about it.

Absolutely, it is her body, her rules; including what is feeding off it and attached to it.
