the smartest move any company has made was to make their games FREE. Why? Because they understand that the key is to cast your net as wide and deep as possible to catch the most fish. By offering all their games free, what they are doing is allowing ALL to play and try their product. If the product is good, they become addicted to it and realize in order to advance or enjoy the gameplay even more, they will need to purchase items, upgrades, skills, credits, and purchase things like game cards, money cards, subscriptions or whatever extras you have for sale. If you don't believe this system works, just look at the cosmetic industry or the fashion industry. It's exactly the same principle. People see others with upgrades and thus they stand out more, have a higher value to them, and you want to be that too, so people will spend money and lots of it to get up there. It's a weird human nature thing, but it's proven to work. Maplestory was a great example for me. I joined it for free and played it for free for weeks...but the more I played, the more I realized how much I needed to upgrade my equips and my appearance and get NX items and other stuff to be godly and significant. I ended up buying game cards and all sorts of in-game accessories to really become elite which made me feel significant and boosted gameplay. I ended up spending a couple grand on that game over 3 years that I played and it was worth it at the time. I enjoyed the rare privilege of being one of the game's most elite and everyone respected me because they knew who I was, and if they didn't, all they had to do was look at my godly equips and my level (200) and my youtube videos etc etc...it's all part of how it works. If the game wasn't for free, I would have never played that game, even if it was only $19.99 to play. I wouldn't have played and Nexon wouldn't have made 2-3K off just me. Now multiply that by 100,000-2 million players and see how much money they made. Side: Always!!

No. I say this because the developers need money to be able to produce better games if their equipment gets old, or they end up replacing something. It takes a lot of time and effort to make a really good game. Although, I know some games will often be free, but be filled with microtransactions, and that's how they make their money which in my opinion it's a bad idea. Side: Never!!
