Should animals be used for scientific research or not?
The usage of animals for testing is a very popular issue today. In nearly all countries animals, such as rats, rabits are used for scientific research. There are to opposite points of view on this issue. The debate will never end. Iwant to discuss it with my friend.
In my opinion, medical science can't develop without animal testing. The results of drug testing on animals are recognized as the most accurate. So there is no alternative method, which can be so reliable. As a result without animal testing scientists can't test their drugs and of course can't save millions of people's live. For example, animal testing help them to create antibiotics and vaccines that saved many people. So only the polio vaccine itself saved millions of people's lives. Moreover, nowadays treatment and control of disease aren't possible without animal research. So it helped to defeat many dangerous diseases such as Thalidomide. This disease infect pregnant women and in the middle of the twentieth century many babies were born whether without legs or hands, but nowadays it can't cause any problems, because the treatment to the illness was successfully tested on rates. Moreover, scientists use animals to test new remedies, which would cure many dangerous diseases, such as AID. However without animal testing scientists can't create new drugs, new treatments, which would be save millions of people's lives. So I think that people forgot about origins of most remedies and they can't imagine that animal testing helped to create drugs, which save millions of lives every day.
The minimum length for an argument is 50 characters. The purpose of this restriction is to cut down on the amount of dumb jokes, so we can keep the quality of debate and discourse as high as possible.
You couldn't find a bigger animal lover than myself but if we may have the cure for cancer and have no other way of figuring that out other than testing it on animals then it's only common sense that that is what needs to be done.
The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. I don't want to see any animal testing but if the only way to find cures for diseases that kill millions, like cancer, is to test on some field mice then so be it. Those same tests can not only save the lives of countless numbers of humans but animals as well... remember, animals get cancer too.
I do understand where you are coming from. It must be programmed in the brain. But mice may be mice, but they have life. What about testing on a thousand humans than testing on a thousand mice. Now that would seem immoral because humans want to protect other humans. That is why most people hate rapists and murderers. It is against our moral code.
I don't want to complain. I see no point. I want to live. Yeah i don't like mice but if you were a mice, i bet you will want to live. Humans are humans and they will protect other humans. This is how life is and deep down, im glad.
Well today it looks like they are giving their bodies for testing to protect us. In a way, it is similiar to rape by the fact that it is not consensual.
I was about to say that no animals protect humans but that is a lie. Dogs protect us. But that is only it. I don't see elephants or tigers protect us.
Anyway, all i can say about mice is that they have life. Kill or be killed. And we humans want to kill to not be killed...
No. I love meat. I love hamburgers. I know what you are thinking and why you asked it....please don't go there. lol.
I did admit in my previous arguemnts that i was hypocritical. However, this is how i feel. If i has to be come down to me being tested or a mice, you know what i would pick? Of course, the mice. Humans want to live. It is programmed.
Are you a vegetarian? I automatically assumed it when you said you were an animal lover.
You know this world is one reason why i want to die. It is hypocritical and contradicting. Even tho it is a reason, i still want to enjoy life.
edit. I would say that if you are a vegetarian, i would call you an animal lover for the most part.
If scientific research wasn't conducted on rats and rabbits and other rodents, then nothing would ever be discovered. They can't use people, and if they can't use animals, what else can they use? Simple as that, I think.
I also agree that animals should be used for scientific research. On the one hand it is cruel and unethical thing. But on the other hand chimpanzee's DNA is simmilar to human's in 90 %. Also organs of such animals like rats, dogs and etc similar to human's, so it allows use this benefit for open heart surgeries and transplantations.
How else are we going to learn the secrets of medicine without killing people on accident? I don't particularly care if animals die from medical testing; if it means more human beings live, then I see no shame.
And if the animals are only put into extreme pain from the tests, just give them animal-painkillers!
If animals were not used for scientific research we would be a living in a very primitive world. We would not have even half of the medical breakthroughs we have achieved over the years because of animal testing. Animal testing, contrary to what a lot of bigoted Christians and hippy groups like to say, is actually most of the time very humane. I would much rather live in a world where testing on living things is not necessary, but i do, and it is very necessary.
Contrary to what a lot of bigoted Christians and hippy groups like to say, is actually most of the time very humane.
"More than 100 million animals every year suffer and die in cruel chemical, drug, food and cosmetic tests, biology lessons, medical training exercises, and curiosity-driven medical experiments. Exact numbers aren't available because mice, rats, birds and cold-blooded animals—who make up more than 95 percent of animals used in experiments—are not covered by even the minimal protections of the Animal Welfare Act and therefore go uncounted. To test cosmetics, household cleaners, and other consumer products, hundreds of thousands of animals are poisoned, blinded, and killed every year by cruel corporations. Mice and rats are forced to inhale toxic fumes, dogs are force-fed pesticides, and rabbits have corrosive chemicals rubbed onto their skin and eyes. Many of these tests are not even required by law, and they often produce inaccurate or misleading results; even if a product harms animals, it can still be marketed to you"
Im truly against it. If you want to test medicine, test in on yourself. Yeah i understand that without animals, we wouldn't get far in the advancement of medicine but honestly....do you want to be tested?
Dont get me wrong. I would choose a rat over me any day if the only two choices of testing was either me or the rat.
Whaaa?! We might as well revert to bloodletting and treating humor disequalibriums. Do you know how many dead mice go into releasing a drug? You would rather that be dead scientists?
There is no doubt that i would give a mice for testing than me. But i find it immoral because life is life. If you don't want to be put up then what gives you the right to be put up as well?????
However, i can't deny the advancement we have grown with animal testing and im grateful that we have lots of cures.
So a 1000 dead mice for 1000 saved human lives isn't worth it in the end.
Let's make this argument a little less banal. Your mother is diagnosed with a terminal disease, there is a drug that could theoretically work. If she takes it without animal testing she will most likely die. But to give her a 99% of living you or the researchers have to kill 1000 mice. And remember this hypothetical drug could go on to save more hypothetical lives.
Someone asked me a similiar question: a friend is dying. The medicine he has to take has not been tested. Test it on a mice, or test it on the friend. Who would it be? I picked the mice because obviously have more love for my friend than the mice. However, i still said that it was wrong. The moral choice (and i can't say it is a religious choice that God would like) is testing the medicine on a friend. You might be like...."what, you cruel person."
The reason why i think choosing the friend is the moral choice because tested animals don't have a choice. Similiar to rape by the fact that it is not consensual.
Now your question. The moral choice for me is to give my mother the untested drug. But would i really? No, of course not. I love her.
I told the person who asked me that question.....replace the mice with an another pet....dog, or cat. Or maybe another human! You might be crazy to think that i would suggest another human. But life is life. If you were a mice, wouldn't you want to enjoy life. Well i can't suggest that for sure because i don't know all brains seek happiness and the enjoyment of life.
In the end it is worth it. Saving humans is what i want to do when i have lots of money. Making the hungry full. The poor rich with happiness and their good needs met. Why would i care for mices? I guess it is programmed in my head.
Edit. Killing my mother or my friend is not the moral choice for humans. Humans will want to protect humans. It is just the way it is. Therefore it is immoral but it seems right. (That is going to be the focus on my next debate).
Also i never mentioned, that if there was a third choice, i hope i have the strength and will to choose me over my friend and the mice. To test myself the medicine, lol. But that is unlikely so that is why i said strength and will.
I feel like your oversimplifying morality. From a utilitarian perspective sacrificing any life for the ensured wellness of a great many more is always the moral choice. Doing nothing, or balking at the choice to sacrifice fewer lives can bring about unintended consequences and a great many more lives lost.
Morality is often not black and white. The are instances when it is moral to lie, manipulate, and even kill as it is in relationships, relationships, and war (unfortunately not also relationships) - respectively.
Although I laud your response to my somewhat fallacious reductio ad absurdum, I still believe you are suffering from a myopic moral certainty. And I'll let H.L. Mencken finish my argument:
Moral certainty is always a sign of cultural inferiority. The more uncivilized the man, the surer he is that he knows precisely what is right and what is wrong. All human progress, even in morals, has been the work of men who have doubted the current moral values, not of men who have whooped them up and tried to enforce them. The truly civilized man is always skeptical and tolerant, in this field as in all others. His culture is based on I am not too sure.
There is one thing i would agree that was subliminal to me. That it is better to kill a few to protect millions. And in that way, i respect mice more than ever. In a way, they are heroes. And scientists are too.
I think that it depends on what the research is for. For medical research, absolutely, but not for testing cosmetics and self-care products like new lotions, make up or shampoos because in my opinion these are not necessity items. For example if we are looking for vaccinations for illness, of course, animal testing is necessary. Also if the choice will be to harm some animals to save people or if one’s of my family were sick and needed a life saving treatment, I would do almost anything to save. To sum up, an animal suffer in the hands of humans.
I think that animals should not be treated as people's tool at getting something. Also i am not even sure if people have right to kill animals and eat them. When you talk about that it sounds scary, doesn't it? i understand that sometimes humanity have to make decisions whether either us or them. I do really get that. But still, it does not work with me completely. I can't stand seeing how people treat animals like...animals. that is all irony in it. We are so used being cruel to those friends of us, that word "animal" became a synonym of non-ethical creatures. i realize that it sounds confusing, but so is me when thinking of animal treatment issues.
In my opinion testing on animals, should be strictly prohibited because of the two main reasons. First reason is extinction of certain species of animals. If we use pandas or whales for testing, in the future this animals are going to vanish from the earth. Japan already got in trouble because of killing whales. The second reason is: by testing animals people are torturing a living beings... And it is absolutely unethical and immoral. That is why animals should not be used for scientific research.
While iI think that animals should not be used in medical testings. Because animals have rights as well and they should not be violated.Animal testing is used to ensure that products are safe for consumers. Unfortunately, many animals are seriously harmed in the process.More than 100 million animals every year suffer and die in cruel chemical, drug, food and cosmetic tests, biology lessons, medical training exercises, and curiosity-driven medical experiments.
My daughter says heck no! you should test it on a plant first! But, I realize that plants are very different from animals. But she insists, so here it is!
Omgg! You guys are all stupid. How are you gonna say animals should be used for scientific research that is cruel as hell! 1,000 of poor animals die a year just for research. You gotta be fuggin kidding me. You know if you really want this scientific research to go on, how about instead of animals they test on your selfish asses! Because killing an animal is the same thing as killing a human. So stop thinking ur better than everything. And also you guys really are saying bunnies for hamburgers. I hope someone eats your ass one day! Won't that be fun. It'll be fun for me :D
Animals should not be used for testing because if the creature contracts a disease and the human has been in contact with it then we have an infected human. It is down right cruel as well, how would you feel if someone was poking, injecting and prodding you? If it were me or the rat I would choose me, but as a whole it is cruel. I understand the medical community's aim but to know they're killing an animal with no regret? There is a lot of animal activists saying "No Cruelty to Animals" but this often goes a stray when animal testing comes into the equation.
Animals should not be used for scientific research.
All conscious organisms feel pain, but not all can reason to the same extent. Even within the human species, not all humans can reason, but all can feel pain. Therefore, because pain is equal among all species and all animals, research should not be conducted on animals, unless those researches are willing to test humans as well.
Humans and animals are the same. Therefore, they should be treated similarly. If we test medicines and harmful materials on animals then it is not fair.
Psst..., yeah, you..., come here..., closer..., closer..., I'm going to let you in on a little secret..., [joe looks around to make sure the coast is clear before whispering] LIFE AIN'T FAIR!!!! ;)
It's just truly cruel. People think they are the owners of the world just because they are the most intelligent beings on Earth. But are animals mere slaves? I don't think so.
This is actually no different from testing on rabbits, they are killed anyway. We do not do scientific testing on them so that they are not killed, not so they can be eaten.
