Should bottled water sales be banned except for disaster conditions

Some people think that bottled water is bad for consumers and should only be used in situations such as disasters when no other clean water is available.  (Problems: Pollution, Shipping, BPA contamination, unfair profits, water mining, etc.)

http://www.mnn.com/food/healthy-eating/stories/5-reasons-not-to-drink-bottled-water

Others believe that it is a natural and healthy portable drink and that it is good for the economy for the companies to make big profits.

Why should we pay maybe a dollar for a bottle of water?? When we could get it from the tap for free.

Thats not an argument for banning bottle water, but one against its ability to be sold.

As can be observed, bottled water is sold.

I believe bottled water should be banned. Plastic water bottles leak chemicals after a period of time and the bottles are not usually recycled, ending up in landfills and waterways, ruining the environment. The water contained in the bottles is usually tap water, and is not regulated like town water. By selling water, it takes something free, puts it in a bottle, and gives it back to us for a price. Some communities have banned the sale of bottled water, and it has made a difference in the amount of trash going into landfills.

Bottled water should be BANNED! For example, the states that are in drought like Atlanta and many others should have limited amount of water usage but nooooooo!!! coca cola, Pepsi, or nestle keep on pumping water out in which lakes are being destroyed and dried out. Also water on our earth is decreasing! Plus your buying water that you can easily turn on you sink, fill a cup up and drink the exact same water thats in the bottles you buy for FREE!!

DROP THE BOTTLE AND GRAB A CUP!!!!!!!

we should ban water bottles because there is no point on spending money on plastic and paper only to throw them away, which can lead to littering into the ocean. we can get free water from our tap and use the same bottle over and over again. we also save money, an average of $6000. so i ask what is the point of water bottles except for disaster conditions?

Bottled water should be banned from being sold! There are many reasons for this it should be band but the main reason id that it is a big part of pollution. Only about 30% of plastic water bottles are recycled so that means the other 70% are placed in miscellaneous places which are why they should be banned. Also a lot of these plastic water bottles end up at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Also if you think about it, you pay 10,000 times the price for bottled water as you would for tapped water. All of those statements make me believe that water bottles should be banned from being sold.

I believe that bottled water should be banned in all situations, except in dire emergencies. Not only does bottled create a lot of pollution, it has also been shown to contain just as many hazards as tap water. But still, the issue stands, people need water to survive. Maybe, instead of using bottled water and spending all this money towards removing the garbage produced by water bottles and packaging and shipping it, we could use it to fix the tap water supplies, and make it safer to drink. This would give more people access to water, because tap water is accessible in the home, while you have to go out and purchase water bottles.

Is bottled water healthy for us? No not really the plastic has chemicals that can casue cancer. Estimates variously place worldwide bottled water sales at between $50 and $100 billion each year, places like Coco Cola, Poland Springs and Nestle. Bottled water creates 1.5 million tons of plastic waste a year! And most people dont recycle because its not convintent for them so why pick up a plactic bottle when you can have water from the tap for free people yes for free!

Many believe that bottled water is bad for many reasons. The obvious reason that bottled water is bad is the expensive. Bottled water is very expensive; Americans spent $10.6 billion on bottled water in 2009 and paid up to 1,000 times the cost of tap water. Many know that bottled water is also bad for the environment. Bottled water wastes fossil fuels in production and transport. Bottled water production in the United States used the energy equivalent of 32 and 54 million barrels of oil to produce and transport plastic water bottles. Bottled water is both wasteful and harmful if their containers are not properly recycled and they wind up as trash in a landfill – and every year 38 billion bottles, valued at $1 billion, actually end up in landfills. In water bottles they contain BPA, which research has shown that the links to side effects that include behavioral problems, brain development issues, cancers and a whole slew of other debated conditions, especially when consumed by children. This proves that bottled water is not healthy, smart with money, or good for the environment.

Bottled Water is not good for the environment and should be banned except for disaster conditions because bottled water is not a good value of water, also you may think that it might be healthier than tap water for you but you'd be wrong. Bottled Water is actually alot worse for you. Another reason why its wrong is the incredable amount of waste it produces, up to 1.5 million tons of plastic a year!

I strongly believe that bottled water sales should be banned except for in disastrous conditions for the reason that it seems that we are running out of fresh water, and a lot of life forms need to live off of that water, such as fish. People think that fish can just survive off any water, but that is not true, fresh water fish need fresh water to survive which means that they can not just be dropped into the ocean. These bottling companies are ruining there homes and ours. If we are expected to sustain life on this earth for another couple thousand years even, how are we supposed to keep the balance in our ecosystem with out fresh water? Thus, killing off fish, wildlife that use these fresh waters to drink and even humans in the future that will have to find an alternative to drinking water. Also another thing to think about is how much pollution it causes. Everywhere you go you will end up seeing a plastic bottle in the water, or on the street, this is ruining all wildlife habitats. And why these companies should be making a profit off of something that should be free is completely unbearable. It is a natural resource, and as a natural resource it should be treated as such. They are making pure profit that is not necessary.

caroline. Marketers want us to believe that bottled water is healthy by putting labels on that say things like; deep pristine pools of spring water. When you actually think about it, bottled water is just water. It is costly and wasteful. Tap water is healthier than bottled water and is regularly inspected, where bottled water is not. By drinking bottled over tap, you are at risk of getting cancer or other diseases. Bottled water turns to garbage. It produces up to 1.5 million tons of plastic waste per year and over 80 percent of them are just thrown away. When this happens, birds and other anilmals are at risk of mistaking our plastic for food. Bottled water sales need to be banned, to save our lives and keep our planet safe!

Bottled water should be banned because the plastic is harmful towards the environment, and not to mention the fact that the bottled water companies are charging consumers hundreds of times more for water that is the same that comes from the tap. The water that bottled water companies like Nestle and Coca Cola comes from places like Maine. They take such a high quantites of water from their natural reseves that locals are forced to cut down on water usage, and some are even left without any water from their tap, period.

I think that bottled water should be banned because its harming our environment. If everyone recycled there bottles then we would be fine but because of the fact that half of the people just throw there bottles anywhere they end up in oceans and huge waiste lands that stay there forever. Bottled water can also cause cancer because the chemicals in the plastic can leak into the water.

Aidan- Bottled water should be banned because why would you want to buy a bottle of water when you can get the same water out of your sink for no price at all. Bottled water also causes to much polution, most of the bottles end up at the bottom of the ocean.

I think drinking bottled water is one of the most ridiculous things people regualy do, however, it is up to the consumer to make their own idiotic decisions. Why should we ban something people buy and therefore stimulates the economy? Sure, it's a mostly stupid product, but so are a lot of things.

Really cause most mains and ground water supplies are contaminated with all kinds of chemical carcinogens, heavy metals, and dioxins that we use to treat our land

Not where I live it isn't. Don't be so ethnocentric.

Secondly, you do realise that bottled water is in many cases just tap water, right? That's complete with all those lovely carcinogens from your mains supply.

Should major corporations stop bottling massive amounts of water? No, this is their right as an American. Our economic system is free enterprise which means little to no government regulation; our country was founded off the principle of freedom and if we try to stop them its violating their constitutional rights to make a dollar

The argument against bottled water, is not so much against the water but the plastic bottles that they come in. For one they're recycleable; which means they can be reproduced and reused over and over, with out the consequences that you would recieve from, say, breaking a glass trying to drink tap water. The glass breaks, you cut your hand, and still have a mess to clean up; whereas with bottled water, if you drop it nothing happens but that the water spills out.

Bottled water is a good thing because if there is a natural disaster, such as a hurricane (like Katrina in New Orleans) water mains may break and people will no longer have access to clean water. With bottled water we are able to provide clean and safe drinking water to people that may not even have a home anymore. Most people complain that the plastic the water comes in isn’t safe either but the alternative is a higher costing metal or unsafe glass that can break and cause serious injuries. Bottle water companies prosper on the sales of their bottled water. Ultimately the decision to purchase bottled water is an individual decision. Therefore, you can not make the decision that bottled water shouldn’t be sold worldwide. The understanding that more than half of the world isn’t recycling the bottles properly isn’t and shouldn’t be the bottled water companies issue and they shouldn’t be held accountable. Pollution is a major issue when it comes to the bottles, but the bottle has the recycling symbol to inform buyers that it can and should be recycled. The future of our planet is in our hands and if we make the decision to not recycle our bottles even after being educated about the pollution it causes doesn’t mean citizens shouldn’t be told not to purchase the bottled waters because the citizens are the ones who are ultimately the reason are planet has to endure pollution. Overall, you are entitled to your own opinion and have the right to display your opinion, but it should be done the correct way.

Should major bottle water companies stop using large amounts of water? No because many used bottle water on a daily bassist. If we stopped bottle water i think there would be a big problen, because i drink bottle water everyday and it's a free country. Plus water makes the economy better so bottle water should saty.
