Should children be forced to read?

Would forcing them to read change their future. My sister was always forced to read, her rebellious behavior was against reading but soon after recommending her some interesting her behaviour miraculously changed, when was the situation in this, may it change our rights or is this foce read thing against the law?

Reading is the Key to an Education. Children should read more in and out of school. Reading is the key to getting a good education as it opens up the path to everything else. If kids can't read, they don't learn science, math and health. Children need to be able to read to broaden their minds in class, at home and on the Internet.

Certainly. Reading is an essential life skill. School is there to prepare kids for what comes next. Certainly, there are children who already read plenty and are fine readers. However, others are not so blessed and many would have benefited greatly if they had learned to read better in school.

Many people disagreeing with this do so because they fear "required reading," specific books that may or may not be enjoyed by readers. While I do think at least a few books should be "required reading," that is not really the topic of the debate. "Should children be required to read more" taken literally just means what it says. No specific books involved.

kids don't know their right or wrong...and reading is surely an excellent habit to acquire. But first parents should try to develop their in it....and if they don't agree then without any doubt they should force them. And it can be easily seen in day to day life that children don't like to do things which their parents tell them.

Yes, they should be definitely forced. Leave aside whether it is right or wrong. But in the current society where there is no future without education, children should be forced to read.I am saying forced because it is definitely not right. The society is at fault by prioritizing education. So there is no other choice.

So Easy to Say "Yes" ,but Look Again The question is asking whether children should be "required" to read more. That implies that there is either a governmental or scholastic stipulation for children to read more in order to pass certain gates in their life. While anyone will say the more you read the better (and I agree), I think the "requirement" portion of this should rest in the hands of the parents of these children. The parents at that point in their lives should know how valuable reading is, and they should be the ones enforcing a certain level of reading, rather than placing the burden on schools and/or other rules and regulations facilities.

Encouraged or even enticed, but not forced. Of course reading exercises the imagination and develops communication ability, but it's a pastime which doesn't come naturally to many children, especially boys.

Yes indeed, encouraged is the right word here.

To encourage children to exercise their imaginations through creating images in their brains from the words we read is I believe fundamental to our existence as social human animals.
