Citizens should be encouraged to vote and debate issues from childhood. Student government is supposed to form a basis for that, but not enough kids are involved in it to make an impact. If teachers let more decisions be made in committee by the students, and illustrated how decisions were made by regional and state governments, people might be more active as adults. Not many people participate actively in local government, and when was the last time you contacted your congressman to let them know how you felt about an issue? Maybe through education, citizens would become more active in their local area. Side: Yes, educate citizens
I like your idea of running a micro society in schools. But I think most kids don't get involved because the impact of participation is so minor. I mean, what are kids allowed to control via school government? Nothing meaningful, I'd warrant. While I've always tried to pay attention to the "big issues" of government, it wasn't until my dog got in trouble for barking that I realized that local government is what really affects us. And so few people actually participate in local government that you can make a huge difference, just by SHOWING UP. And by showing up, you find out how things work. But I'm going off topic a bit....
